We spent 2 weeks here at the beginning of Feb. 2012. I have done various all-inclusives before, in many places, so I thought I knew what a four star resort was when I booked (according to Expedia). The problem here is that the hotel was just recently re-branded from a Presidente to a Holiday Inn Resort (they actually hadn't even got all of the old presidente promo material changed yet). The property itself is in fairly good condition for a 30 plus year old hotel. It is laid out well to take advantage of the beachfront. It is within walking distance of the downtown shopping district of San Jose del Cabo, and Cabo San Lucas is a $35 dollar cab ride away. During the day, there are several pool bars available to provide drinks, all within easy reach. The constructed wetland next door is a nice distraction.
Unfortunately, there is only one bar open at nite, in the lobby. It is not near large enough to accomodate all guests, and there is only one counter to make orders at, so you had to wait in line. Long lines, at times. Which brings me to my biggest complaint about this resort - WHERE ARE ALL OF THE STAFF? I was told that when they re-branded, almost half of the staff were laid off. Everytime you need service, there is no one available. I don't see it as a motivation problem - everyone was very hardworking and helpful - but a staffing problem. The staff are simply overworked. You can't put 300 couples on a resort advertised as 4 star all-inclusive, and then provide only one bar with one server. Same problem with meals. During the 14 days I was here, not once was I able to go through the buffet line and get everything I needed. There was hardly ever all of the pieces of silverware needed, and generally at least 30% of the food items were missing. Again, not enough staff to keep up. Also, only one buffet available at dinner, and one a la carte that seats approx 20 couples, so you are rarely able to book it. The beach snack bar suffers from the same problem. Usually, you have to wait at least 15 minutes for service, and don't count on a second visit.
Also, the food leaves much to be desired. As I mentioned, I have been on several all-inclusives, and everyone always complains about the food. I normally don't have a problem with it, but I was disappointed this time. It is very bland, and much to my surprise, vegetables were hard to come by. I have grown accustomed to very good and plentiful produce in Mexico, and that was just not the case here. Hard time trying to eat healthy. It would be considered low end pub food back home.
All in all, not a terrible resort. The few staff they have are absolutely wonderful (Alma at the quiet pool bar is a jewel and deserves mucho tips!), and the building itself is clean and comfortable. But the food and staffing levels need a lot of attention. And it is nowhere near a four star resort.
Room Tip: Stay away from the lobby. The bar entertainment is so loud it will keep you awake. And the ground fl...
