This is a truly lovely and beautifully landscaped RCI property. We had reserved a 2 bedroom suite for two weeks but needed an extra night in a Jr. Suite before our vacation began. Based on too many bad experiences, we never, ever accept rooms with adjoining doors to other suites. The first room we were assigned was terrible: the lamps, TV and air conditioning were inoperative. We could hear people arguing loudly next door. Back to reception. The second room was marginally nicer and everything worked fine. However, it was also adjoining and equally noisy. Thank god for ear plugs, essential kit for seasoned travelers. The next day we moved into our two-bedroom, which was quite lovely and very quiet. Its worth pointing out that the accommodation is decorated in the Mexican style and not the sort of North American luxury that some RCI members might expect. But it was very spacious and well-appointed, with three full bathrooms. Our only quibble was the horrible sofa bed, which made for incredibly uncomfortable seating in the living area. Unfortunately I was sick for the first few days and needed to see the on-site doctor. I was stunned to find that she and the nurse operate out of a tiny, dank windowless room in the lower parking lot. Very strange.
On the positive side the staff and location were universally excellent. While there were lots of activities for kids there were several pools along the ocean front where adults could sit quietly, undisturbed. It was lovely walking along the beach and the licensed vendors were not a problem. Food and beverage service around the pools was terrific - sure it's pricy but what do you expect at a Sheraton? This is not an all you can eat and drink operation, thank goodness.
We enjoyed eating at Pitahayas Restaurant, one of the two pricier dining options on site but were bemused by the weird food stylings offered at the highly touted De Cortez steakhouse. It looked pretty enough but the food quality was poor. As for Girasols, the Mexican restaurant, we were horribly disappointed by both the quality and the service we received from staff on both occasions we ate there. I do however recommend Tomatoes, the more casual dining option, which serves top notch food and is staffed by some of the kindest, most solicitous people we met during our entire two-week stay.
I would definitely return to Hacienda del Mar. We had a great time and met some lovely from all over the world. But it is a long trip by expensive union-rate taxis to either Costco or Walmart so you need a car if you plan to stock up and self cater some of your meals. As others point out, the little shop on site is ridiculously expensive: only shop there if you are truly desperate.
Finally, everyone who went to the timeshare presentation commented that it was a horrible experience, which in effect kept them imprisoned in a little room with high pressure sales staff for up to four hours. Don't be seduced by discount offers: nothing makes up for lost vacation time and putting yourself through such trauma. Just tell staff on check in that you already own timeshare property and never, ever go to a timeshare presentation while on holiday. They will not bother you again.
