We stayed here during the last week in January, 2012 while attending conference. We really felt like we had the place to ourselves and the service was flat out amazing - I don't know if this was due to the time of year or if it is always this way, or a little of both. Here are comments based upon past reviews:
Social Scene = if you are counting on your resort and/or its location to provide a stimulating party atmosphere - this is not your place and you should stick with the Apple, Sandals type places or stay in downtown Cabo San Lucas. This is a great place for people who are busy or already have an exciting life back home and want to unplug and relax.
Distance to Cabo = It cost us $20 divided between 3 couples to take a 20:00 shuttle to the marina area of Cabo for a night of shopping, drinks and dinner (Hacienda for great cocktails on the beach. Edith's for decent dinner. We had a good and fun meal but why would you want to go to a steak joint here when they have some of the best/fresh seafood and mexican specialties that you may not be able to get back home?) If you live in a decent sized city the commute is down right cheap and convenient. I don't get the complaints about the distance or cost. FYI - the roads in this area are now in great condition so if you do not drink and wish to drive around, you can rent a car at the resort.
Food = the $25 breakfast buffet is a great bargain and the food and cocktails are top notch. The restaurant at the beach served the best fish tacos I have ever had - Sea Bass for the fish definitely helped. Try the local beer - Pacifico - very good. Also, try the Baja wines - the Syrah/Shirazz options were comparable to good Australian wines of same varietal and a good value.
Beach = I snorkeled 3 days and saw great fish. I suggest low tide for more options. It was absolutely protected from the rough waters and very safe. Further, walk down the beach in front of the private villa for sand at whales beach. Plan on swimming in the beautiful pools with occasional dips in the sea.
Whales = constantly saw Gray whales leaping out of the water at all times of the day.
Rooms = they stuck us in a low room that was near the kids club, smelled of cigarettes and had an ash tray - could smell someone smoking on balcony. We called the front desk and received an immediate upgrade to the 5th floor non smoking on the other end of the resort - loved the room and balcony. This section was called Fiesta Rewards Great bathroom and king bed. MAKE SURE YOU ASK FOR 5TH FLOOR AND NON SMOKING.
Time Shares = we never were approached even one time about time share sales.
Pools = top notch and multiple options. Unlimited high end towels for the padded lounge chairs at the pool and on the beach. Great food and drink service on beach. Can also bring your own water, snacks or beers if you are discreet about it.
Grounds = beautiful flowers, trees, and amazingly clean. The workers flat out hustled and were so nice.
Golf Course = I have played a selection of sea side courses around the world and the Ocean Course here stacks up with most of them. Don't be alarmed by the list prices for T-times. If you call the pro shop in the off season periods, you will learn that they will cut the prices in order to get play. Also, cheaper after 1 pm. Everyone I spoke to said the Desert course there was fantastic.
Final Assessment = this is a great place to hide away and relax for 3-5 days. The wonderful service, beautiful scenery, great food and attractive pools/seaside location make this a special place to recharge your battery. If you want more of an adventure vacation or a party scene, choose a different spot.
