This was my first trip out of the United States and was excited to see what was out there in the world. The only other hotels I've stayed at were ones I vaguely remember as a child and young teenager. The sights of multi-colored sheets and smoke from casinos from Nevada casino/hotels were all I was used to many years ago. For my first experience outside the country, I found myself missing those "quality" amenities after my most recent stay with Villa La Paloma in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
My friends and I planned that we would make the trip to the famed Cabo San Lucas for our college spring break. After 4-5 years of college, we decided it was finally time for us to experience the "real" spring break as most others might enjoy it. One of my friends took care of planning the entire trip and decided on Villa La Paloma as our hotel stay for 6 days. He said he had been there before a few years ago and said it was "decent" or "good enough", I cannot remember. Since I've known him for quite some time now, I decided to trust his judgment and we all rolled along with it.
While dreaming of beautiful and breathtaking views, I was disappointed to see that this was essentially nonexistant. The view around the hotel is quite bleak as you see nothing but damaged sidewalks, a trash littered field that is devoid of any real life, and a huge street with non-stop traffic amounts. Needless to say, the view from around the hotel seemed to mirror the conditions on the interior of our room.
I stayed on the first floor with my friend and the first thing I noticed was that the hotel windows are unable to be locked! I checked with my other friend's room and they also had windows that were unable to be locked in any fashion. They did have the security of living on the 4th floor however. But in our case, any person can just essentially slide the window open from the exterior of any room on the first floor (or any floor if anyone is foolish enough). I definitely felt unsafe, considering I slept right next to the window itself.
The interior furnishings were mediocre at best. I don't know about what everyone else might prefer, but I prefer a carpeted hotel room. There's just something about it that makes me feel more comfortable and "at home". If you look at the floor, it is all white tile with blackened grout. So if you aren't comfortable with that, be sure to keep your shoes on for sure. The other room furnishings were alright; it came complete with a refrigerator, stove, microwave, etc. Basically the essentials needed for survival were all there. There was a random dish of dish detergent and a random knife to cut things. If you plan to do any cooking of your own, you will need your own utensils and platters.
There were two beds in the room I stayed at; one in the actual area where you first walk into and the second bed had its own room. I slept in the walk in room and this was alright I suppose. It was only made tolerable by keeping the AC on all night to keep the room cool enough to sleep. Outside the window in plain view was the pool, random plants, and a very bright light that acted as my nightlight. For those who require absolute darkness when they sleep (like myself), consider turning away from that or bring a cover to cover your eyes.
One thing I noticed after sleeping in that bed for several nights is that room service does NOT change the sheets or pillows I believe. Under the covers, I noticed a specific mark/tear in the sheets and remembered what it looked like. To test to see whether or not room service actually changes the sheets, I looked for that same mark in the sheets and realized they do not change it at all when they come in to "clean"! It seems like all they do is make your bed and that is it. I found this to be quite surprising and revolting. I don't know if they clean sheets and pillows in between guests, but I know for certain that they did not change my sheets or pillows throughout that week.
Another huge problem I had was with the bathroom. The placement of the toilet was literally right next to the shower and shower door. There was a definite lack in seating area and you had to angle yourself and your feet away from the shower door area to properly be able to sit down and do your business. At first it was very uncomfortable to even go about my business, but after awhile it came easier. The shower head also does not have differing/variable spray patterns. It is either very strong or off. Be prepared to have your skin sandblasted with high pressure water (if it even works). The second day I was there, we had NO water whatsoever and had to use our purified water jugs to brush our teeth with.
Lastly, do NOT leave your doors open for any extended amount of time. We found a very large cockroach stumbling in and around our room (near MY bed too!) before I was about to sleep, and that definitely made things uncomfortable and unsettling. I eventually removed the pest and was paranoid for awhile to see if there were more.
Overall, this was a budget room and we got what we paid for. I honestly would have gladly paid a bit more for a more comfortable room and living accomodations. My friend took charge and I trusted him, but sometimes another's judgment and standards may be lower than your own. Don't let anyone take charge of your own personal comfort and safety. It does not hurt to spend a bit more. It took me all quarter to save up for this trip (I'm a college senior) and honestly I would have poured in more money on the living arrangements to ensure my comfort in this "resort" area. For those looking for an affordable and cheap way to live in Cabo, this might be your place. However, if you prefer comfort and nicer amenities, this is not your place. Needless to say, I've stayed at nicer inns in the States. This will be my last and only stay at Villa La Paloma.
