We travel down from London at least once every 4 to 6 weeks to the Cotswolds and have stayed in quite a few of the dinning pubs/hotels in both the South and North Cotswolds area and I have to say that my wife and I have had one of the most enjoyable and memorable experiences whist staying in the Horse and Groom in Upper Oddington.
Upon our arrival we were greeted by the owner of the hotel who made us feel most welcome almost to the point as if we were regulars being welcomed back, we instantly felt at home even though we had just arrived.
Having enjoyed a glass of local ale and my wife a glass of white wine from an extensive wine list which she described as a find we were shown to our room which was so typically Cotswold both in feel and appearance. The room was very warm and inviting.
When we made our booking which was for 2 nights ( I which we could have stayed longer) we also booked a table for dinner in the restaurant. Having spent an hour or so walking in the afternoon, we went back to our room to rest and prepare for dinner.
Upon arrival in the restaurant we were met by who I think was the owners wife who again made us feel very welcome, instantly we felt that we were in for one of memorable occasions were everything just goes right. ( We weren't disappointed)
Whilst ordering our meal and having a drink at the bar we tried 2 small bowls of the 20 or so olive oils with home made bread to dip with and let the owner recommend one of his wines to match it was so good you could have thought you were in Italy.
Having ordered our starter from the menu and main course from the blackboard the food and the service was as excellent if not better than anything we had experience during our many years of travelling to the Cotswolds.
After one of the best nights sleep I have had away from home the next day after breakfast we decided to do a 3 hour walk and ended up in a similar village pub for lunch and almost as soon as we had sat down and ordered our meal we instantly felt we had made the wrong choice, after eating what can only be described ok at best average we decide not to take any more chances and cancelled our dinner reservation in another dinning pub a couple of miles from where we staying and re booked another table in our hotel restaurant.
Having returned to hotel and after showering and changing for dinner upon our arrival in the bar we were once again met by the owner who not only remembered our names but also remembered what drinks we had before dinner the night before and also the wine that we ordered with our meal.
Once again we had a very enjoyable evening in what I can only describe as a very warm and inviting atmosphere the food was as good as the night before.
Having stayed 2 nights our only regret is that we could not have stayed longer. One thing for sure is that on our next visit to the Cotswolds even though we have several years of experience and many happy trips to this area as silly as it sounds we really genuinely feel we have found a home from home establishment and can't wait for our next weekend away.
Thank you for making us feel so welcome.
