“Loved it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 December 2011

My Hubby and I stayed at the Hilcroft on Sunday 18th December and I really couldn't fault our stay. The room was spotless with a nice toffee cookie on the pillow (large biscuit), foxes mints and water at the side of the bed, which were nice touches. We had to turn the heating off in our room as it was roasting!
The food was delicious, certainly no complaints there. However, I'd agree, the drink prices are a tad expensive for the area.
The breakfast was superb and what a huge plateful if you order the breakfast plater, my Hubby couldn't finish it.
Overall a lovely hotel to stay at with nice friendly staff. Will definately stay again.

“Great food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 November 2011

Haven't stayed here yet but have been for a meal a few times and have to say, the food has been amazing, couldn't fault any of it! The staff were great and really friendly and the prices aren't to bad either! Having my wedding here in October 2012 so hoping for equally as good a time, if not even better!

“Friendly service and clean rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 October 2011

I stayed on business here for 2 mid week nights. Although the rooms are a little dated it was spotlessly clean and the little extras in the room more than made up for this fact - giant chocolate cookie on the pillow, bottle of water and mints all nice touches. I found all the staff to be very friendly, polite and always had plenty of time to chat. I was very surprised at the quality of the service and food in the restuarant in the evening with a top quality menu serving an electic range of dishes.
My breakfast was cooked to order with scotch pancake and hagis - absolutely delicious! None of the usual help yourself hot food from great big vats under hot lamps here which has got to be a bonus.

“Work In Progess - Could Be Lovely”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 August 2011

On a business trip to Edinburgh during late August and the Fringe is on means hotel prices in the city go crazy. This led to me seeking alternatives and this is how I came to be at the Hilcroft Hotel (a £40 taxi ride from the airport). This proved to be a pain as the taxi fares started to build up over - this is a good base if you have your own car, but I wouldn't recommend it if you don't.

The initial impression is not good. Whitburn has a reputation for being run down and maybe a little rough and the surrounding area is a large council estate. In fairness this does not impact on the hotel itself but makes for a poor first impression.

Inside, the hotel is in need of modernising and the corridors were in the process of being redecorated during my visit so this could be the start of this. The rooms are quite dated and I felt that for £75 a night it was no better than a Premier Inn type location. It was comfy but the room I was in (27) was directly next to an extactor fan than was on from 6pm through to 9pm. This would not be a problem if you were planning on being out during this timeframe, but it was impossible to work in the room even though I had the free WIFI available.

As a family run location, they have clearly invested in the restaurant side of the hotel as this was excellent. The food was of a high standard, good quality and good value for money. This standard also extended to the breakfast. I found the staff to be friendly and helpful throughout and clearly care about wanting to make the restaurant an enjoyable place to be. It was busy each night with a good mix of residents and local diners.

It was also great to see that chivalry is still alive - Ladies Only parking by the front door!

Room Tip: Room 27 has a loud extractor fan next to it from 6pm-9pm
