My husband and I were looking for a quiet, laid back place to kick the winter dull-drums and we found it in San Carlos. This was our second trip to Mexico, with Cancun being our first. We preferred San Carlos by an landslide. During the winter months, the town seems to become a snowbird escape, and we felt like the youngest ones there (we are 48/49). But still loved everyone we met. All the locals were warm and willing to serve.
We are used to staying in Westin resorts, and had traded of our Starwood weeks to go to San Carlos, so we were not sure what we were going to find. We were overall pleased with the resort. The staff was warm and courteous and welcoming, the rooms and grounds were meticulously clean. But there are a few suggestions I would like to make.
If possible get a top floor room. We had a family staying above us, and the tile floors coupled with some active kids led for some early morning wake up calls. The adjoining rooms were not very private, and we could hear our neighbors through the adjoining door. Also, we had a studio, and nowhere was it listed, or pictures were shown that there was no couch in the rooms. We are used to every vacation rental having a living space. We had to use the bed as a "couch" which was not the most optimal set-up.
The dining at the resort was limited as the restaurant was being renovated, and they had a make shift kitchen on the patio, and no alcohol was being served. The food was acceptable, and we preferred breakfast to any other meal. The only draw back was the windy conditions on the patio, was sometimes not conducive to having a meal.
The resort is located on a rocky area of the beach, so there is no beach available to swim in. They did however, have a sandy area with chairs to at least allow you to feel the sand under your feet.
Some positives included: Clean, and well kept rooms and grounds. Resort has free dvds rentals available at the front desk; Rooms have safe available for valuables; The staff was great.
A few general things about your visit. First, be sure to get pesos for your stay. There are a few banks/atms which do a good job at the conversion. Most place will take American currency, but the exchange rate is typically not equal to what you would receive at a bank. A few restaurants take VISA / MC but we found none who took AmEx. Get yourself a phone app to help with the conversions. It will help with deciding on tips, etc.
The Soggy Peso is just down the road, and was a great hang out spot. Also try The Cotton Club ( http://www.bonifacios.com/Bonifacios_Cotton_Club.htm ) right next door to the Soggy Peso for an elegant, but quite reasonable dinner experience. It was a great place to have a special meal, with excellent food.
Overall our experience was a positive one, and hope to visit San Carlos again!
