“Magic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2011

The staff was incredible. They made us feel welcome, comfortable and totally at home. The rooms were private and beautifully decorated. The breakfasts were delicious as were the margaritas. it felt as if we were visiting friends living in a special house more than staying at a hotel. Sipping a margarita in the evening, as the sun went down and as the church bells rang across the rooftops was simply magic.

“Nice folks but there are infrastructure issues.”

My wife and I stayed here for five nights over the Christmas holiday. This is a four-room boutique hotel located on a fairly quiet street just a few minutes walk from the town's main square.
The staff were very friendly, helpful, available and pleasant to talk with. Each day we had a full, substantial breakfast prepared to order. These meals were quite good and we never had to repeat the same meal twice over the five mornings there.
The room was pleasing to the eye, the bed comfortable (although short), and the linens and towels were of excellent quality. Wifi worked smoothly.
On the down side there were a few room issues that were quite significant to detract from one's enjoyment of stay. Firstly one should realize that it gets cold at night in San Miguel--consistently down to the low 30'sF in December it seems. Three out of the four rooms here are on ground or below-grade level and get zero sun during the day. So they tend to be naturally cold. The heating of the rooms at the Oasis is via gas fireplace, which did an adequate job of warming the room but caused a notable odor of combustion fumes, even with just the pilot light going. Upon inspection I found that the fireplace was not vented via a chimney at all and therefore we kept a window cracked when we went to sleep with the fire off. Other issues were the bathroom door that only opened halfway due to the bottom edge rubbing on the floor and the fact that there was no place in the bathroom to keep one's personal items. (Could one put in a shelf or even a towel bar, please? Towels were kept in a basket on the floor and I think they were washed after each use, which to me is an environmental shame.)
For most of our stay we were the only guests. One night we had others stay in the hotel who seemed to not understand the idea of keeping things quiet out of courtesy for other guests. It made me think of how awful this place could be if it were full.
Overall we enjoyed our stay here mostly because of the great staff and the fact that we loved San Miguel. But when I think of the room issues and the fact that we were paying $350 per night (with breakfast) it makes me challenge the tripadvisor Bargain Traveler's Choice 2010 nod. You let me down on this one, tripadvisor.

“Sanctuary”

A beautiful small hotel with magnificent decor, personal service and a great location. This was our second stay. Our favorite things about the Oasis are the staff and the amazing breakfasts. Well, maybe the rooftop garden area too!

“The Oasis is a true sanctuary in San Miguel.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 September 2010

My husband and I just spent 3 nights here last week and can't say enough good things about The Oasis. First of all, the location is perfect, just two blocks from the Jardin, but far enough away so the church bells aren't a problem at night . You step through the front door and the smell of flowers wafts up at you. We poked our heads into each of the four bedrooms at some point, and they're all beautifully appointed, with big, comfortable beds and a quirky but sophisticated mix of antiques and collectible art from all over the world. There is a cool and calm sitting room where we enjoyed Juan's great margaritas and snacks one afternoon. There's no restaurant (San Miguel abounds in great places to eat) but the breakfasts (included) were amazing--we had everything from cinnamon french toast to chilaquiles and various Mexican eggs dishes. The service was unobtrusive and uniformly kind. When the waitress discovered that I liked milk in my coffee, for example, she began warming the milk each morning. The front desk staff will answer any questions you have and help you in anyway possible. And here's a tip: the hotel has its own car service available for trips to and from the aiport in Leon--it cost us $75 for two on our return instead of $60 for the shuttle van, but was definitely worth it, since you get to leave closer to your flight time and ride in real comfort. I have stayed at--and looked at-- several other places in San Miguel, and would definitely rank this at the top.

“Like family, only more elegant and better prepared.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 August 2010

My husband and I just returned from the most magical visit to SanMiguel de Allende. The Oasis and its staff were even more flawless than we expected. The rooms are authentic to the region and beautifully appointed, yet full of modern comforts (great shower, cushy robes and towels, rich bath products and fluffy pillows). The staff works like a quiet, well oiled machine and the breakfast....well...what can I say.? My taste buds never had it so good. The recommended dishes from the region were fresh, beautiful and customized to our desires. The plates of fruit were like Mexican rainbows. We felt as though we were guests at a very exclusive private residence that lacked even a hint of snobbery. I cannot imagine anything better. Every need, no matter how small, was adressed by the staff even before we realized we had the need. If you go for tasteful, understated elegance, great food and help with your Spanish, stay here. It is well worth the price. Wow. When can I go again?
