This was our second visit to San Miguel in a year. Last year we stayed at the Trip Advisor #1 rated hotel in SM, but we had heard such great things about Dos Casas we decided to give it a try.
The hotel is conveniently located with an easy walk to the Centro and Jardin, but is located on a very busy bus route. We had booked a Master Suite and were given room 6, El Patio. It has a rooftop terrace with a jacuzzi tub and 2 lounge pads for sunbathing and a table with 2 chairs. In older reviews with pics, I had seen nice towels rolled up and placed for use on the lounge pads, but we had none of that. There were 3 potted trees, but with such a beautiful, sunny location, it would have been wonderful if they had placed some flowering plants as well - there just seemed to be a lack of ambiance. While the rooftop terrace was lovely in theory, the busy street below did dampen our enthusiasm after a few minutes of listening to loud busses and screeching brakes on the street below. Definitely not possible to enjoy a nice quiet relaxation.
The room itself was nice, but had the potential to be so much more. The bathroom had 3 showers - a steam shower, outdoor shower, and indoor shower, and a sunken bathtub for 1 person. These were all lovely. The toilet is in its own little room and there is a vanity with double sinks. Lots of towels were provided, and heavenly smelling Molton Brown bath products - although we were staying 3 nights, none of these were replenished, which I thought odd and rather cheap. The main bedroom had a very comfortable king-sized bed, a sitting area with comfortable furniture and a large flat screen t.v. Most of the furniture and the area rug on the floor were definitely showing some wear and tear - perhaps time to freshen them up?? Also, and we found this part to be very strange - there is not 1 picture or piece of art on the walls of the room or bathroom - this created a rather cold feeling to the room. With so many talented artists in the San Miguel area it would have been perfect to showcase some of these unique pieces in the room and would definitely have been an improvement to the decor. Although we were told the gas fireplace does work, my husband was unable to get it working after several minutes of trying. Not a big deal, so we didn't bother to ask someone to fix it. This particular room backs onto the street - it is at times very noisy in the room during the day with all of the bus traffic going by...it was somewhat quieter at night, due to the fact the busses stop running, but it is by no means what we would consider a peaceful room. I don't think the other rooms in the hotel would have this problem as they faced the interior and were not backing onto the street.
Breakfast was included with our room. At the hotel we stayed at last year, we also had included breakfast and what a feast it was...every item a person could desire or think of and unlimited coffee, juice etc., all included in the cost of the room. At Dos Casas you are handed a breakfast menu with many delicous sounding items, but for the included breakfast you may only have the "American Breakfast" - which consists of toast and eggs - no bacon or sausage, no hasbrowns, just toast and eggs. Not a true American breakfast and not really desireable when you could enjoy some of the Mexican breakfast offerings. We decided since it was vacation we would just order what we wanted and pay for it - 2 mornings of the 3 one of us had a breakfast that was inedible - I had sent mine back the first morning to be cooked the way I had requested, and the exact same dish was brought back to me 3 minutes later, not corrected. Not cool - and needless to say I didn't eat it. On the 3rd morning my husband ordered the waffles and we could not believe that a professional chef had prepared them, let alone had the nerve to serve them - they were black! on one side, and I do mean burnt black! We probably should have sent them back, but after the response the first morning when I sent my meal back, we figured why bother. That being said, we did enjoy an absolutely delicious meal for dinner the first night we were there. So the food just seems to be hit or miss which is a shame. The service in the restaurant was attentive and friendly. We were not invited to dine in the kitchen on any of our visits as other patrons seem to have been.
We had noticed a DVD player in the room so we inquired at the desk if there was a selection of movies to watch....we were handed a stack of approx. 10 dvd's to choose from which they told us we could take them all back to our room. We had only heard of 1 of the movies and they were all at least 10 years old - again, at the hotel last year, they had a library with a selection of 100's of movies, current and classic.
Hotel staff was warm and friendly and always had a hello and smile which was very nice.
Overall, we had a nice stay, but felt the "special" factor was just not there. The courtyard lacked character - no flowers or comfy places to relax, the decor was hit or miss - some spaces decorated warmly, others feeling rather cold, the breakfast being our biggest disappointment. We travel extensively and appreciate fine accommodations and are willing to pay top dollar to have a great experience...both of us felt Dos Casas had the potential to be "wow" but it just wasn't there.
Room Tip: Request a room not backing onto the busy street
