My wife and I stayed at la Puertacita the second week of June, 2011. We ended up there because I purchased a package through LuxuryLink.com. The package included six nights stay, five days of language lessons, transfers from Leon, and some meals. It was an awesome deal! I think we paid $1,300 for the entire thing.
Anyway, the hotel is located just east of town, out of el centro by about a mile and a half. It's a down-hill walk into town (we did it once), but quite a hike back. The hotel offers a shuttle that was available most of the time we were there (the place was pretty empty until the weekend). And a cab ride to or from is only 25 pesos (about $2.30). The disadvantage of the location of the trip into town where most things you want to do in San Miguel are located. The advantage is the surrounding area is much quitier. I've read many complaints about barking dogs in the city. No problems with that at La Puertacita. But, you are also out of the vibe of the city.
We stayed in a one-bedroom suite. It was nice, but nothing great. My only complaint was how warm it was in our room at night. There is no a/c, and none of the windows opened. The evenings got cool (into the 50s), but the walls of the building are pretty thick. Even with the ceiling fan on high, it took some time to cool the room. It made for a couple long nights. (I'm a wimp about sleeping in heat.)
There are two pools at the hotel. They are both nice, but during the week we were there I never saw anyone in either of them, or the in the hot tub for that matter. It's not really that kind of a setting. The hotel is very shaded. It sits on the edge of a small valley. Of course the areas around the pools are cleared and nice, there isn't any pool "scene."
If 24/7 access to the internet is a requirement, make sure you get a room close to the office (where the router is located). Ours was some distance away, and I could only connect from our room in the morning, and then barely.
The restaurant was excellent as was the service. Every morning after breakfast the hotel had arranged our ride into town for our Spanish class. They were attentive and responsive. I also appreciate the hotel did not nickel and dime us for everything. Our package covered everything they said it would with no surprises.
Summary:
Pros:
Great service
Restaurant
Value of package
Tranquil area
Cons:
Not much going on at hotel other than sleeping and eating
Distance from town
No A/C
Spotty internet coverage
Room Tip: Comfortable lodging out of action of town.
