I was really looking forward to staying at Casa Quetzal based on previous reviews, although apprehensive after reading the recent very negative one. Our experience was not terrible but there is much room for improvement here. I think the problem stems from the change in management which occurred last August. The new staff speaks very little English so are not able to make recommendations for helping to make the most of a stay in San Miguel. However, they were pleasant and did try to assist us at times. Our room (#301) was the master suite with a lovely terrace overlooking the town. We were grateful for the fireplace which kept us warm on those chilly nights. The room itself was pleasant enough and clean but was "tired" and in need of some upgrades especially in the bathroom (old tiles and fixtures). The lighting is very weak so some areas were too dark. The linens were old and should be upgraded. I believe this is the only room that has wifi access.
Breakfast is no longer served at the hotel. Instead you receive a voucher for a nearby cafe which was a nice place but rather inconvenient and choices were limited.
The terrace where I believe they used to serve breakfast and beverages throughout the day was certainly not as appealing as shown on the website. The communal jacuzzi was not in operation.
San Miguel itself was absolutely delightful. The hotel location was great and close to the Jardin. We spent hours just walking around the city and stopping in at the many shops, galleries and restaurants. We enjoyed sitting in the Jardin and watching all the activity. We also rented an ATV and went on our own exploring the surrounding countryside which we highly recommend. We felt perfectly safe wherever we went. The people of SMA were very nice and helpful. We would also recommend a visit to the El Charco botanical garden (a 10 minute taxi ride).
We will definitely return to San Miguel in the future but choose an different hotel.
