“Beautiful place but unsafe fireplaces”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

My husband and I just got back from spending 3 days at the Casa Luna Quebrada location. It is a beautiful B & B with lovely courtyards and our room was very romantic, the Rojo y Oro room. The first night, we decided to light the gas fireplace. There is a sign on the fireplace asking that you have an employee light the fireplace and that you should turn it off before you go to bed. About 10 minutes after the fire had been lit, I began to get a headache so I asked my husband to check to see if the flue had been opened. He checked and discovered that there was NO flue! It became very clear why they didn't want you to sleep with the fire on.

We immediately turned the fireplace off and opened the windows to air out the room. Since the fireplace is the only heat source for the room, we were lucky that it wasn't an especially cold night.

The next day, my husband told management about the problem and they offered to move us to another room. That room didn't have a flue in the fireplace either so we didn't move. (We did love our room). They tried to fix the situation by bringing in a gas space heater that they set up in the fireplace which alleviated the problem a bit because it wasn't throwing out the quantity of fumes that the gas fireplace had. I still felt very uncomfortable having it on though so we used it just long enough to take the chill out of the air. I'm not an expert but I've always heard that if you are using a gas heating appliance, it should be vented.

I'm not sure if all of the fireplaces are unvented but we were talking with another guest who also got a headache soon after the fire had been lit and hers also had no flue so at least 3 of them are unvented.

I've read through all of the reviews for Casa Luna and was surprised that nobody complained about this issue. To me, it could be an extremely dangerous situation which is why I am writing this review.

I have nothing against Casa Luna and think it is a beautiful, charming place to stay in San Miquel and is pretty close to the main square. Just maybe go when it's not so cold or take some warm pajamas.

“A heaven in the middle of the Historic district”

My husband and I stayed five nights in Casa Luna and it was magical. We went during January for two reasons. 1. My birthday 2. It´s considered low season. The time if year is perfect, warm during the days and cool at nights. San Miguel de Allende is the perfect little town to walk around all day, have a cup of coffee, read in the park or just shop around. I do have a very important tip, Print out a map! When we first arrived I was confident we could find the Bed and Breakfast with very little trouble, little did I know Casa Luna does not have any sings outside to indicate what it is. As a result we drove around aimlessly for an hour before calling and getting directions. Once you walk in the front door the world just melts away, you walk into an oasis of peace and quiet. The place is amazing, filed with overflowing plants, quaint arches and courtyards. We stayed in the Treetops room, The room is spacious and inviting, warm colors and wonderful sunlight. The room has a view of the sunset which means there is no morning sunlight, very nice when you are trying to sleep in. The room itself was very clean and the bathroom large, with two sinks and a huge tub. The hot water had very good temperature and pressure. Both things hard to find in old buildings. The first night we did have a bit of a problem sleeping, both of us used to the normal roar of city living found it loudly quiet. There are church bells around but not loud enough to wake you. Like most B&B´s the breakfast is included and it was excellent every single day. For the day of my birthday the cook made a more elaborate breakfast for everyone, it was delicious. Fresh fruit and fresh juice, hot coffee, hot chocolate and teas were served since sunrise for those early worms. One morning I wasn´t feeling well and we had breakfast served in our room, all we had to do was ask. Everyone in Casa Luna does their best to make your stay as conformable and pleasant as they can. Carmen the host is a wealth of information, she knows the best stores, all the streets and best of all speaks Spanish and English perfectly. I fully recommended this B&B for everyone!

Room Tip: The second floor rooms are more private.

“San Miguel's Best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

This is the second time I stayed at Case Luna in San Miguel de Allende and definitely not the last. The first time I attended art classes and the program booked us rooms there. The second was a few weeks ago, for sight seeing. This place, a self enclosed villa, is very well appointed - every room is different and filled with details of old Mexico's relics. The staff is incredibly service oriented and even attended to our special requests. We felt perfectly safe and well cared for. Near by is a delightful coffee shop and spa (pilates, yaga, meditation) and town central within easy walking distance. San Migiuel is known for its American ex-pats but what I like so much is that they have blended with the local community - there is even a Sunday organic farmers market which Casa Luna staff participates in. The food at Case Luna is incredibly delicious. I feel at home away from home here and can't wait to go back!

“Great place, great people”

We chose Casa Luna for its wonderful Spanish colonial charm and its proximity to the Jardin. We were very happy on both counts. It's great to experience that traditional housing that opens up around a central garden. Casa Luna is in a quiet side street yet it's only a five minnute walk to the heart of SMA. Equally good is that walking away from the Jardin takes you to several terrific restaurants. But that was still not the best of it for us - when we were experiencing problems forward booking transport because our debit cards had Australian billing addresses, Carmen, the manager sorted it out for us.
Nothing was too much trouble. She spent several hours arranging payments and travel arrangements. It was more than we could have epected. Carmen was also very knowledgeable about the town and the region.

Room Tip: Treetops room has a wonderful terrace.

“Lovely place but incomplete.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2012

Stayed over the end of December and over the new year.

The location of the hotel is great - central and walking distance to everything. the hotel itself is charming with olde mexicana deco... The bed was a little soft but large and comfortable. Bathroom is spacious and well stocked. There was a water shortage when we were there but we did not feel the constraint. hot water was adequate despite comments from other reviewers. There is a fireplace with a gas fire which required the room staff to light up in the evening if you required it. Our problem with it was that the fire sometimes drops off, and there is no clear instruction about how to turn off the gas. In a closed room this is of course extremely hazardous.

There are two old dogs running around the place, but there was no poop anywhere, and they were very quiet. We never heard them barking at all and they were definitely not a nuisance. There is a faint smell of dog which may be annoying to non-dog lovers.

The breakfast is functional - continental breakfast with cereal/fruits and some mexican beans/stew/eggs.

Bad points:
a] Internet in the rooms suck! The only locations where you can have decent wifi is in the library or sitting in the corridor outside the hotel office.
b] No cable TV in the rooms.

All in all fair value for money. The main advantages are comfort, security, quiet and convenience of location. With a bit more effort this could have been a great hotel, so only 4 stars from me.

Room Tip: Rooms all appear quite similar.
