“Tranquil Tulum”

Looking for a hidden gem of real value in Mexico? On arguably the best beach in the Yucatan? Nancy and I flew to Cancun this past November and after taking a cab down to Tulum we ended up staying for 3 weeks at El Paraiso Beach Club Hotel. During our month away we checked out Cancun and Playa del Carmen and we had a fabulous road-trip to Valladolid, Merida, Sisal and Progreso, but Tulum provided the peaceful getaway we needed.

The El Paraiso Beach Club hotel is about 1 ½ kilometers down the North beach road in Tulum, about half way to the Tulum ruins. There are only 10 rooms and they are not luxurious, but rather they are well appointed and very clean and the property is spacious and the beach is magnificent! What makes it special? First, the Manager, Silvia Giordani. She was gracious, warm and helpful at every turn. Silvia treated us like family and she always went out of her way to make things better for us in so many little ways.

Secondly, did I mention the beach? Protected by a reef which lies about ½ kilometer out, the sand is like white sugar and the waters are those indescribable shades of turquoise and azure. I am attaching some photos.

Next, although the hotel provides a full breakfast on an outside terrace, as part of their rates, they do not have a conventional restaurant. Nevertheless, there are 2 terrific restaurants within walking distance at nearby hotels, at La Vita e Bella and also The Mezzanine.

Lastly, because they are “off the grid” and they have to supply their own electricity by generator, they shut off the power from 6:30 am to 2:30pm. You can still shower during those hours, but you can’t get internet during that time. Relax - you’re there to unwind! So… just go and enjoy!

“Great value for your money”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 November 2011 via mobile

I stayed before in a boutique hotel near El Paraiso before (Mezanine) but as they had no room for our last two nights we moved to El Paraiso. I were not sure because of some bad comments in Trip Advisor but the place was fantastic for half the price that we paid in the other hotel. Even the breakfast was not perfect at least it was included in the price and also the sun beds on the beach. Also you are in front of the coral reef and a walking distance from the ruins. If you can choose go to the room #1 (is the closer to the beach)

“Great vacation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 November 2011

Just got back from El Paraiso. Great location. The rooms do not face the ocean, but are close to it. The price was great and included breakfast and beach chair rental. They gave us beach towels for free, but said they usually charge 30 pesos. Breakfast was fruit, orange juice, coffe, toast, and eggs. Breakfast was very good every day. The rooms are nice. Not big but adequate. They said the power would be shut off every day from 7 am to 2 pm. It was more like 6 am to 2:30. Not a big deal, but 8 am to 3 pm would be better, while we are all on the beach. The rooms are right next to each other so if your neighbors are out on the front porch, you can hear them in your room easily. While we were there everyone was very respectful of others so it wasn't a big deal at all. We also got free wi-fi, t.v. and air conditioning while the power was on. Bathrooms are not big, but again, adequate. Everything was very clean and our rooms were cleaned every day. I would definitely stay here again. The beach is beautiful!!

“Great place to stay on the beach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 October 2011

The location is definitely the star of this hotel. It's just off the beach (enough to be quiet when you want it), but a 30 second walk away from the gorgeous ocean. Use of the lounge chairs on the beach is included, which is a nice bonus. The restaurant on the beach also provides a pretty good breakfast in the mornings.

The rooms are simple but clean and quite nice. Much time isn't spent in the rooms anyway when there's such a great beach to be on so nearby. The power is down for a few hours each day, but typically when you're out of your room anyway. This is one of the few hotels on the beach that offers Air Conditioning, which is a huge bonus on those hot, humid nights.

The staff were quite helpful when it came to questions about the area and local attractions, and were quite happy to assist in dealing with the local companies if you had questions or problems.

Room Tip: All the rooms appear to be the same, none have a view any better than another. Perhaps the best room...
