We researched this Hotel for quite a while and chose it over our favorite hang out, Casitas Royale. We wanted a change of pace, Ocho Tulum looked like a perfect spot.
We arrived on November 28th for a week, everything was great, just like all of the reviews posted here say.
On Monday, November 30th the hotel was siezed by 20 Mexican Police with machine guns and shields, others were empting out the rooms of everything and loading it onto a large moving van. Surveyors were surveying the beach, others had fence posts and 10 spools of barbed wire which they were going to fence the hotel grounds off.
Alex, the assistant manager came up to my wife and I ,the other guests and let us know that we had to evacuate the Hotel immediately. Alex did say that he was embarrasssed, we do feel that he was sincere.
Seems that someone else owned the property or the repo man was reposessing everything.
We are still trying to find out exactly what happened, rumors are flying.
Alex did get us a room up at Playa Azul, drove up there with us and let us know we could stay there for the rest of our trip and he would credit us the difference. Some of the other guests who were kicked out were also staying at the Playa Azul.
We chose to move on the next morning and look for something else, we stopped by Ocho and the gate was chained and locked down.
Today is Thursday December 3rd, we are staying at Cesiak and tomorrow we are staying at
Milamores for a night. We have made the best of a bad situation. I can imagine what others may have gone through.Imagine others with little money, little travel experience only to be kicked out of your hotel onto the street.
I just got an E Mail from Cris the manager at Ocho, (whom we never met)crediting part of our credit card deposit less the two nights we stayed, the food that we ate and the wine we drank.
My wife and I have run a successful buisness in New York for the last 30 years, we would never dream of charging one of our customers for a dreadful experience like that. If this place has won Trip Advisors Hidden Jem award there are alot more facts hiding out there about this Hotel that need to be brought out in the open.

Ocho Tulum Resort was illegally and improperly seized and closed by the government and we are taking legal action to reclaim our property!!
We have some exciting news, however, we have partnered with Blue Tulum, a 5 star luxury resort, during our temporary closure to accommodate our guests. Ocho staff is in the process of contacting our guests. All inquiries regarding this partnership should be made to Ocho Tulum directly.
We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused our guests during this unforeseen event. Our guests are like family and we treat them as such. We took all the necessary steps to insure our guests’ safety and security. We not only arranged for alternate accommodations immediately, but the Ocho staff personally transported our 6 guests affected by this incident to the alternate accommodations. We would never put a guest “out on the street”. This is not Ocho’s standards.
We sympathize with the scare the Mexican authorities created . It ultimately effects Tulum as a whole. It unfortunately is not uncommon to see armed guards not only at checkpoints on the highways, but in towns big and small and yes, during the seize of property. It is extremely important to note that the incident was handled in a calm, cooperative, professional manner. There was no chaos or panic, no force or violence to our guests or our staff.
Ocho Tulum is truly saddened by this situation and we hope to have this matter resolved as quickly as possible so we can once again be reacquainted with the Ocho Family we have created and pride ourselves on.
Again, we are in the process of contacting our guests and we ask that should you have any questions concerning your reservation please contact Ocho Tulum directly at reservations@ochotulum.com. We would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding.
