“Disappointing :(”

Luna Maya may have been a nice place at some point but it did not live up to anything posted on it's website. It's hard to believe it is the same place. So many places in Tulum, skip this one. We decided to risk it stay in the cheaper cabana's after reading the many mixed reviews but we regretted it. Try Zamas 2 doors down.. the food there is amazing and I heard from guests there that the accommodation is great too!

“A decent value with a few caveats”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

A decent value for your money, but make sure you get a suite. When we first arrived we were in a basic double room which had a bathroom separated by a curtain, definitely not enough privacy unless quite comfortable with your traveling companion. The room also faced the noisy street which started bustling by 7:00am and therefore was an irritating way to start the day.

After we were moved to a suite with a private balcony, our stay improved ten fold. Breakfast was too basic: fruit, bread, juice, and no eggs. Luckily, Matteo's, a great restaurant and cafe, was directly across the street to ease out hunger pangs.
It was always understaffed; never more than one person available.
The beach is quaint and picturesque but the ocean bottom was rocky and the water filled with seaweed.
Nightly live music was understated, charming, a nice vibe and ultimately a strong point of this hotel.
When checking out there was some confusion due to a misplaced email and record on the staffs behalf. This caused extra unnecessary stress but was ultimately resolved. We recommend Luna Maya if you're on a budget and want a more quaint experience than you would get at one of the big hotels such as maya tulum.

Room Tip: Get one of the suites!! The basic double we had was very uncomfortable.

“Nice, cheap but noisy”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

We really liked the place and the hotel itself is beautiful. The private beach is nice but rocky. We stayed at cabana 6. You can eat great paellas at the restaurant and the complementary breakfast is awesome. Staff is very friendly. Our problem was that we couldn't sleep well at all due to of the street noise and music. Our cabana faced the main street and we had live music from the hotel and the restaurant crossing the street until midnight. After the music was off the problem was the street noise: traffic is almost constant throughout day and night, people talking...you can hear everything from the first cabana. So we were tossing and turning until 1 or 2am and then at 6am the street noise and noises from the hotel normal routine wake you up. It was just $70, but even if you pay $250 for the fanciest room at this hotel I think the noise problem would be about the same.

“A good stay overall...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2012

We had a good trip overall. We stayed five nights in Suite Gueco, #10. The room was very cool. The palapa room was nice as well, with cool art accents. The restaurant is solid and the bar/outdoor areas are especially nice. Our view was lovely and the hotel gave us a free bottle of wine upon arrival.

The shower was a little hard to control, but we did get hot water. At most, we just had to wait a couple of minutes. The water was salty and the pressure was weak, but this is par for the course in this section of Tulum.

The breakfast was basic. As others have mentioned, it had juice, coffee, a small amount of fruit, and toast. It wasn't bad, but did feel a little limiting after five days.

It was pretty cold when we went; be aware that temperatures can drop to the 50s at night during winter. Compound this with the ocean wind...and you'll need warmer clothes and blankets. Thankfully the hotel supplied us with two.

Unlike some previous reviewers, we did find palapa umbrellas on the beach and mats on the loungers. The cove is very nice; I thought I'd prefer an open expanse, but this was better.

The location is really good. The hotel is located between Piedras Escondida and Zamas. There are many restaurants within easy walking distance, as well as an (expensive) convenience store with an ATM.

The wifi was weak and worked for about half of the time.

If I return for a stretch of time, I probably will stay in a resort because I missed the amenities. However, this is a pretty good hotel and a great choice for a weekend.

“Great location, rooms need some work.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 December 2011

We paid $90 for a king size room for two which is a good price for Tulum. The location was great and the staff was very friendly. The rooms were clean but a bit run down. The light switch in the bathroom had a short in it so every time you switched on the lights you got shocked (we eventually just kept the lights off in there). Our room had a front and back patio, the back patio had a hammock and the front one had two chairs. There is an observation platform over looking the ocean on a little cliff and we sat up there and watched the stars at night. Nice little beach and walking distance to a few restaurants. Price includes a continental breakfast of toast, juice, fruit and coffee.
