My wife and I have been coming to Los Arrecifes for the past 20 years, 5-6 times in total. If you are looking for the fanciest digs on the beach, this isn't it. If you are looking for the best restaurant, this isn't it (there are many others to choose from). But if you are looking for a beach experience unparalleled in Tulum--this is it. All the other lodgings have public beach fronts that are linear and two-dimensional--just a string of chairs or lounge chairs strung out parallel to the water with maybe some shade. Los Arrecifes' private beach is about 40 years deep and dotted with about 20 palm trees with hammocks hung between them, creating a beautiful visual scene of light and shadow on the deep, soft sand. The palms are not only important aesthetically, they also provide a wide choice of sun/shade variations throughout the day, unlike the stark choice between 100% shade or 100% sun that a man-made structure presents.Their beach also contains a large dune dotted with palm trees. This dune is important when the ocean on-shore wind begins to blow harder (which it often does). You can lie on the far side of the dune protected from the wind, in a peaceful, quiet, sunny place. In short, the beauty of the place, in combination with the incredible view of the ocean, must be seen to be believed. If you don't like it, just walk up or down the beach and try something else. We wouldn't think of living anywhere else when we're in Tulum. The staff does not speak English ( they do speak Mayan), but they are very sweet and accommodating. Los Arrecifes is unique in Tulum for its beauty. The pricing is comparable to other hotels, but you are paying more for the exterior amenities than for the interior ones. But the rooms are more than adequate in our opinion--just not posh.
