“Nice but...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

Bedbugs are common on the Yucatan Peninsula and this place has not been spared despite the overwhelming scent of cleaning agents. The rooms are large, it seems hardly anyone in Mexico has king beds. Outdated decor but pleasant. I searched before taking the room for bedbugs but apparently not thoroughly enough. One telltale sign is small brownish-red spots that stain the sheets if someone rolls over and squashes one. My son was mauled - he had the king bed. On closer inspection the next morning I found a few faint spots on the sheets that were previously undected, probably because they had been nearly obliterated with bleach. Also surprising was the guest who stumbled into my room at midnight. His room was next door but his key worked just as well for ours. Good thing he didn't plan on taking anything - the safe didn't work. Didn't disturb him, he partyed into the night. We were happy the internet worked. Would have been a good value except for the bb's. Nice enough locals. Little English spoken but they did well with my butchered Spanish for our purposes. By the way, I work for a government entity vested with pesticide control so this is not the raving of a random lunatic.

“Oh my - not at all like the website :0(”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2012

As my mother in law rented this room for my husband and I as part of our romantic getaway, I cannot complain too much . . .

It was horrible. She paid $140 a night for a room in which the bathroom was a constant puddle for the entire six days we were there - and we approached the staff on day one to let them know that there was a pretty serious leak that was damaging their bathroom and making a mess of the place and upon check out nothing had been done other than on the last day they brought us two extra towels to soak up the water so that we did not need to use our t-shirts anymore. . .

The pool was a bright green color and all six days no one used it. We asked if they intended to clean it, and the response was. . . yes (although this never happened).

The restaurant on the property consisted of a lonely dark kitchen with one guy sleeping in it. When we asked about breakfast, (after looking at the menu) we were told that an omlette with ham was all we were able to purchase - and they were $11 each. There is a Chedraui grocery literally right across the street where ingredients could be purchased, but apparently it is not important to the staff to accommodate their guests. (needless to say, we declined breakfast and walked to the Chedraui and purchased the fruit we attempted to order)

Finally I would like to say that when we checked out and spoke to the receptionist about our stay and the indoor pool in our room, she plainly stated that - oh yea, that, well, we called and the said it would take a while, at which we replied - it would have been useful to know that you did not intend to fix it while we were here, nor offered to move us to another room (which there were more).

My advice? Don't let the pretty website fool you. . . if I returned (which I doubt), I would not pay more than $40 a night to stay here. For $140 a night my expectations were higher. Also, you can find much nicer hotels in Playa Del Carmen for $60 a night ( as we did for the last two days of our trip ) and they were very nice and clean.

Room Tip: Higher floors have less A/C unit noises

“Good Hotel and Friendly Staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2011

The hotel is good and the most amazing part is the very friendly staff. All the staff members are very helpful. They go beyond their way to help their customers. The room was clean, spacious, and decorated very well. There is a room for improvement with the restroom (mainly shower). The hotel has a good looking pool and a restaurant. The ruins are 6-8 km from the hotel. We can find lot of taxis from the hotel to the ruins. I recommend the hotel for the room and for the friendly staff.

We liked our stay at Villa Tulum, The rooms and pool were not as good as they undoubtetly will be next december, but the host Alejandro is someone every 5star hotel would like to employ. He's trying his best to change the hotel around, so let's give him a hand and start booking!
