“Paradise ...or close enough”

We just came back from a fantastic holiday in Mexico, one of the highlights being our stay at La Zebra. Travelling from Europe, this was our first time at the Caribbean and our stay truly fulfilled our expectations of the Caribbean. La Zebra has great decor and a gorgeous setting ...White sandy beaches, warm ocean, palms, hammocks and cocktails. We stayed in the owners suite/balcony suite which we loved since you get your own outside space with breathtaking views and ocean breeze. There are many pretty hotels/cabanas as you walk up and down the beach but La Zebra, at least from the outside, stood out from the rest. Also because of the chill out area outside and the painted restaurant tables. The restaurant offers great food with attentive service in a relaxed, laid back environment. All the staff where very nice. Try the Mexican Chardonnay if you are a wine lover apart from all the fantastic cocktails. One thing we did miss unfortunately, was bar service on the beach! All the sun beds are only a few meters from the restaurant tables and still no one ever offered us drinks...we got this at other hotels and was fantastic ...I strongly suggest to La Zebra to introduce this service ....we would have spent so much more!!
Something we did not like during our stay was the shower water. I do not want to blame this on the hotel as I do not now whether its a water problem in the area or just La Zebra's. However, the water feels very salty and wrong on the skin and even with my lips tight I couldn't help noticing how bad it tastes. It is not just Mexican water though since we stayed in 7 other hotels in the Yucatan and no one had water like this. This being said, I must add that this water did very little to deter from our wonderful experience at La Zebra and would surely stay again should I ever return to Tulum! Bliss! Recommended!

Room Tip: Splurge! its worth it!

“If your looking for romance.....look no further!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

We stayed at La Zebra for our 10 yr anniversary and I cannot say enough about this place......dim lit grounds at night...open air restaurant and bar with the freshest ingredients-the drinks are freshed squeezed....try the famous mojitos! Excellent, friendly service as well! The rooms are beautiful cabana's right on the sand. The sand is powder white and super soft on your feet....it goes on for miles. Hammocks and beach beds right there, and you don't have to fight for one because there are plenty there for everyone. There are plenty of beach bars/restaurants up and down the beach (OM was our favorite other than the one at La Zebra).....I honestly can't rave enough about this most wonderful piece of paradise! If you are torn on which cabana resort in Tulum to go to....look no further-stay at La Zebra!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Room Tip: The beach side is worth the extra $ as you are literally on the sand!

“Great beach but something missing”

I was really excited about La Zebra and Tulum as I had researched them for hours upon hours. La Zebra had great food, great drinks, a great beach scene, and we even stayed for half of our stay at the two room ocean bungalow. As great as the beach was, the weather was a little colder than forecasted and the ocean was very chilly. This resort would be great in March-October, but the winter can get a little long. Also, do not stay on the road side of the resort. We were not expecting the road to be so close to the resort and the smell of diesel, the honking of horns, and the continuous noise from the road right next to the jungle rooms made this the worst part of the trip. La Zebra, to be fair, looked very nice compared to many of the other resorts and it is definitely a step above the rest. Definitely go see the ruins and enjoy what we enjoyed the most - eating at all of the awesome restaurants up and down the beach. Our favorites: Italian at Casa Violeta, Be Tulum's restaurant, Las Rias (excellent drinks), Ana y Jose. But our favorite - the pizza and atmosphere at Om Tulum, a few doors down.

Room Tip: Try to stay as close to the beach as possible and spring for the ocean front bungalow.

“Get the beach room”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is because we spent first 3 days at "jungle" side of la zebra and it seams like you are really at another hotel compared to our experience once we moved to beach cottage...

jungle side: has pool but water is too cold.
room is very small and lights are not cosy so it really does not make you want to spend any extra time there than just sleep and get out afterwards. the wooden pole that holds the curtain that devides restroom from the bedroom (it is all in one room - your restroom, shower and bedroom) kept falling down whenever you move it to the side in order to enter the restroom and a few times it well right on my head since it is loosse, and boy that hurt . sink faucet was rusty and there were no hand soaps at the room, we used shower soap to wash our hands.
beach rooms- totaly different story. If you can get cottage number 1! it is awesome, very spacious , 2 rooms , 2 bathrooms. very very nice, and the view is just beauiful, you are right there at the beach, you can't get closer to the sea. it is absolutely paradice

the staff: unbelivable, so nice, so friendly, so so soooooohelpful

the lounge and restaurant: good food, great mojitoes!!! but the "lounge" is just superb!!!- beds and music on the beach- it makes it THE BEST in the whole tulum - you have wireless intenet on the beach and we used it to skype with our family so they can see our kid swimming in the sea...the music is great and you can just lay on the bed or in cosy chair and sink in with the music and sound of the waves.

Beach: especially due to this lounge, I think it is the best spot we have found in Tulum to chill out...and we went to many other beaches..it just has it all, - clean water , no riefs, so youcan safely step in, lots of beds and shade, and music and internet..great mojitoes, no crowd...very relaxing!!!

Room Tip: do not get the jungle side since the rooms are too small and not so cosy. when you get a beach side...

“We're going back!”

Our group of seven stayed in Feb last yr. so 2011. Our private pool area was perfect after an afternoon on the most beautiful beach we have ever seen. We loved the food and found the staff to be lovely, helpful and very friendly. There is an Argentinian Steak House a short walk down the road that, if you're not afraid of red meat, servers the best steak I have ever had. Our group had such a good time last year, we are all heading back on the 3rd of Feb. this year.
