“Hotel prices for backpacker comfort”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2011

Nothing against the location, it is absolutely stunning. Right on a perfect beach with the sound of the waves surrounding you. I also do not mind staying in a basic cabana with an even more basic shared bath. I actually like the "hanging" beds, and I can do without a tv or even without electricity. But with 700 pesos, this is simply overpriced, given the state the resort is in. It was ok for a night, but next time, I will look elsewhere.

“Beware of Diamonte K: Current Management Thieves”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2011

It has been difficult for me to take the time to write this review as it stirs up a traumatic experience I'd rather put behind me. Yet- because I care that what happened to me doesn't happen to any other travelers- I write.

Diamonte K had been recommended to me by friends in NYC. I've been traveling to Tulum for about six years and had stayed at Diamonte K several times in the past. On this particular occasion, I was traveling for five weeks and stopped through Diamonte K for a week. I felt they knew me and would take care of me. There used to be a Manager there named Maria whom I felt always looked out for the guests. She is no longer there.

Toward the end of my stay, the place was quite deserted. It was pre- season. I'd been out to dinner with friends and returned to Diamonte K around 7pm. We decided to sit on the hammocks for a bit and wait until close to 9pm when we would go to a gathering of other friends further down the beach. I had gone into my room around 7pm and nothing was amiss. I was walking around taking pictures of Diamonte K as I am a Location Scout and thought it was a good location for a fashion shoot. One of the young boys who works there walked up to our group on the hammocks and tried to persuade them to buy beers. No one in our group was drinking that night and we turned him down. I went back into my room around 8:30 and the first thing I noticed was that my window had been ripped open. I had put my own metal clamp around the eye hooks that secure the window as there was no way to secure it when I arrived. I looked around and didn't immediately see anything missing- but upon searching my suitcase for my iphone- which was in the side pocket- I noticed it was gone. I immediately alerted the young boys on duty at night; I told them they needed to repair my window frame which had been ripped apart and documented the reparation with my camera. I suspected it was an inside job as there were 4 of these young guys hanging out (they were the only ones ever drinking in the bar during my entire stay.) and no one from outside could have slipped in unnoticed by the employees. We told them that if my phone were not back by morning, I would call the police. It was then that I met my neighbors across from me- a Belgian couple whose cabana was broken into at the same time. I secured my room as best I could and departed with my friends around 9pm. Around 11:30 I returned with a friend as I no longer felt comfortable there alone. The next morning at 8am, the assistant manager knocked on my door and reported that they had my phone. I was not surprised. I said, "Great, where is it?" "We have it" was his response- but he would not give me my phone. They indicated a tourist had found it in the sand (I had not taken it out of my suitcase) and they had to pay $100 to get it back so I would have to pay them. I had been prepared to offer them coincidentally $100 reward for it's return but they beat me to the punch. I sensed they were lying and asked "who returned my phone?" They refused to tell me and because I insisted on knowing "who"- the Manager, Albina, changed the story and said that actually they had to refund another guest $100 for the noise that we made the night before. I considered going to the police immediately as I knew they were now lying- yet I didn't trust them to not change their story again and say they didn't have my phone. So I pulled out $100 and held it toward the Manager, Albina. I said, "Where is my phone- I want to see my phone." She pulled it out quickly, flashed it at me and hid it again behind the desk where she was sitting. We traded $100 bill for iphone at the same time and I snapped a photo of her with my $100 bill for evidence- I headed to the police station. The Belgian couple insisted on coming with me as they felt justice should be served. Incidentally, the manager Albina told them not to go to the police station with me as this was none of their business. They retorted that their cabana had been broken into as well. If you've read their story below, you'll know that the cards were stacked against us. The young boys lied and said that we had been drinking in the bar. As I said earlier, they were the only ones I ever saw in the bar that week. The police, however, did persuade Albina to give me $50 back. This was on the condition that I sign a lengthy contract she had the police type up which was translated to the effect that when I go back to Diamonte K (I had paid another night in advance which she would not refund despite my telling her I no longer felt secure staying there) I was not allowed to talk to anyone about this incident or the police could come and arrest me.

I told them to keep the $100- I'd prefer freedom of speech. I went back to Diamonte K, packed up all my belongings with the help of the Belgian couple who had become comrades- fellow seekers of justice. On the way out, I told an elderly couple next to my cabana what had happened. I asked if we had made noise the night before and they said no. As I walked away from them, the Manager, Albina, ran up to them to give them her story. The good news is that a local news station met with us immediately after and interviewed us for a news story. I'm told they also wrote something in the local paper. From a bad incident came a good friendship with two great people from Belgium. My friend and I took them with us for a few days escape to Lago Bacalar as we now had a bad feeling for Tulum which we needed to shake off. I did end up going back to Tulum after 2 weeks traveling south and stayed at Papayas Playa which I find worthy of trust and Don Diego's- now my new favorite- I shall next commence to write a very favorable review for them.

“A destroyed paradise...”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2010

Ok, this place was some of an experience...
Friends advised it to us, saying it was a paradise, but with unfriendly staff.
How true and worse. Upon arriving we discussed our price and got a supposed discount if we payed our 3 nights in advance. Even then I thought the price was too high (400 pesos a night, real basic comfort, common bathroom and toilets, no hot water). The manager never gave me the receipt I asked. Then I had to ask myself for a second pillow, for towels, a lock for the door and the 2 windows. Bad start...
They didn't give me locks for the windows (which were wooden boards at step-in level) but only some pieces of electrical wire to make a knot, stating that there was no risk of theft.
Our room was not cleaned every day, it rained inside (as all the palm-leave roofs of the resort are in very bad shape), at 6 o'clock it is night and the resort is not enough illuminated even to read and at 9 o'clock they shut of electricity and water leaving a couple of torches. No candles to receive, not even an electrical socket in the room to load your phone. Only a very small table in the room (so you have to put everything on the ground) and no chairs. Team composed of a couple of very young guys who were not friendly at all and doing nothing. Bar over-expensive, and they try to over charge you on the bill.
So quite a lot of negative things from the start, what was a pity for this wonderful place. Because wonderful it is, the location is stunning. Nice rocks, private beach in between, palm trees, blue sea etc...
From the beginning we didn't feel very secure there. We felt the staff and the female manager were behaving strange. But we could not go as we payed our nights in advance. No problem, we went every night in town to have dinner and a walk. And we always took all things of value with us.
After our first 2 beers in the bar of the resort we never took anything anymore there because of the over pricing. Anyway, they don't even propose any food and we know now why. They just want you out of the resort at night (and probably they are to lazy too...).
One night, after going to town, we came back at about 20:30h, and entering the resort we heard a loud whistle and saw a guy standing in the dark. When getting to my cabana, I discovered we got broken in through the front door. Then I saw the electrical wire securing the back window was cut too. So we suppose they were inside our cabana when we got home, were warned by the whistling guy and escaped through the window.
We called the staff to warn them of the burglary. Then things got quite strange as they came, checked and just repaired the damage pretending the wind did it... They never admitted there was a burglary. Strange wind to cut a metal wire and ply a metal hook... Furthermore some of the young staff guys seemed drunk and coked, and tried to make us drink all the time while we were still checking the burglary.
Then we saw an other guest who had been broken in too and whose IPhone was stolen. We all agreed that the staff did this, so we thought about warning the manager the next day. And calling the cops, unless the IPhone would be brought back the next morning, so we told them.
Surprise, the next morning the woman (manager) came to us to tell that finally there hadn't been a robbery because the IPhone was found in the sand under a hamac. Lies of course as we knew from ourselves there was a break-in in our cabana and the other cabana was the same story. And she never took out her IPhone. Then we knew she was in it too.
She pretended that a tourist (who had already left the resort, of course) had brought in the IPhone and had asked for a reward of 100 US$, so the owner had to pay them 100$ to get it back. As we were not stupid, and knew they were all in it, we went to the police to report this. They came to get the whole bunch to the police station and there it was a big joke of course. The police didn't speak English and we didn't speak Spanish. So the manager had free space to lie her own story. Because lying she did and a lot (I do not really speak Spanish, but as I speak French I understand quite a lot). So now we knew for 100% certainty that she was guilty as well as her 3 guys. Of course they refused to pay back the 100$ as well as the extra night the other robbed woman had payed in advance. They pretended to the cops the 100$ was to refund other customers for a party and noise the robbed woman made the night of the robberies. While there never had been any party...
We tried to go to the ministry of internal affairs who do that kind of investigations, but as it was Sunday there was nobody to help us. Anyway, we didn't have any tangible proofs.
Finally, and quite funny, we got ourselves interviewed by the press to tell the story and try to warn the honest people who don't want this kind of bad publicity for their town.

It is only since short that this place has been corrupted like this. The previous manager was a fantastic woman who fought for years to keep those practices out of the resort. Finally she got sick of fighting and left, leaving free game to the bad people.
As mentioned in another post, the owner is some Mexican actor who apparently isn't any good of a person either.

What a waste of a goldmine... I still can not understand how stupid those people are.

“Superb!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 August 2010

The location is just stunning! Diamante K does have its own peninsula, with a private beach, a beautiful bar and basic but beautiful cabañas.

Well, bathrooms are shared, but that's just to keep the Yankees away I guess. Thank you!

As the beach of Tulum is quiet far away from shopping opportunities I would recommend a car or at least a bike.

Highly recommended!

“Amazing!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 August 2010

We traveled to Tulum without plans of where to stay, but we were told by friends that the Diamante K had been a great stay for them the summer before last. We drove to the hotel and asked about availability, and thankfully, they had several rooms open although it was already around 5pm when we arrived. I traveled with my boyfriend and two friends, and we shared a beach front cabana with two queen beds that were suspended from the ceiling and surrounded by mosquito nets. We had a huge open window that looked out to the ocean, and we had a hammack and some beach chairs right outside of our cabana for our own use. Tulum is the most beautiful place I have ever stayed, and I am so pleased that we chose to stay in a beach cabana. This room only cost about 400 or 500 pesos total, and although it lacked AC, it was never so hot that the room was unbearable. The light also does go off at a certain time at night...though I don't remember when...but the path to the communal bathroom, etc. are lit with tiki torches. There is a place to swim nearby and the hotel has a restaurant. We did not eat there, but we had some drinks and they were a little expensive for Mexico...about 35 pesos a beer...but it was not out of control for a place right on such a tranquil beach. The only problem that we had during our stay was that the hub caps to our rental car were stolen while our car was parked where the Diamante K parking is. Though this is unusual for Tulum and not necessarily the hotel's fault, it was a little scary to know that people had time to steal our hub caps and the hub caps of several other cars without being detected. The reception is right by the street, and there was often not a person even at the desk. This being said, I will stay there again but I do not plan to bring a rental car. One last downfall is that the shower in the communal bathrooms is literally so communal that there is no door and it is a big room with two shower heads. If you are one to like to shower without a bathing suit and the worry that someone may walk by (or even come in) then I suggest a room with a private bath or another hotel.
