“What a disappointment......”

First off... The best part of the trip was surely the view from the sea cabana.... I don't think there is anyplace else that could compare to the brilliant sea view and the salted air while napping on the bed swing and my new friend Pablo, the friendly iguana. That said, all else was much of a disappointment. We loved the idea of a quiet vacation without all of the resort style, spring breakish excitement. Cabana on the beach... Awesome, No electricity... saltwater mix for a shower... ocean breezes at night....no children... nude beach optional.... restaurant on site.....spa treatments......Awesome... The Problem? First off the hotel transfer which was set up by Azulik had our name wrong on the sign so when we arrived from the plane it took almost 45 minutes and an international phone call to find our ride. When we arrived to the "reception Desk" (a table under a wooden tent), she couldn't find our name written on their appointment book. I was able to get the confirmation number from my cell (another international charge) and she did finally find it but it was under the wrong date. We asked a few questions about places to eat and the restaurant at Zahara. we were told that the restaurant at Zahara was closed for remodeling. (this would have been nice of someone to mention as I was making the reservations... I even specifically asked one of the representatives who helped with my reservations about the restaurant, who said it was really nice and charged in pesos). We were told that there were a lot of great places to eat and were simply told to go right or left out of the driveway. (no recommendations, good ideas, places close or something in town.....nope.) She did say she would bring me a menu of a place we could order from that would deliver but after 10 days of asking I never did see that menu. We also didn't receive our 2 free tickets to the sweat lodge and when I asked she said they only do it if there are enough people but she would let me know. Apparently during our 10 day stay there were never enough people. Ok.. so...We were off to cabana 11 but after arriving and trying to remove the key from the door... the lock was broken. We went to the desk and spoke with the reception girl. She came to look at the lock and said there wouldn't be a problem to move us to another cabana and we would "NO LONGER BE DISTURBED". We were ok with that as we hadn't quite unpacked yet. After unpacking and having a bit of alone time with my husband to enjoy the day, knock...knock... She said there was an appointment for that villa and that we would have to move in the morning to yet another cabana. The next morning, after packing everything back up and moving to the next cabana and unpacking, she arrived at the door yet again to let us know that there was not a key for the safe (we later noticed the safes are not actually affixed to anything so key or not, if someone wants it, they will just pick it up and take it.) so..... we packed it back up and moved back to the original cabana 11 with the broken lock which had now been fixed. We were each offered a complimentary spa choice for the problems. I went to the spa, which was an open tent at the top of a cliff (it was really cold and windy that day...freeeezing) and received a lovely chocolate scrub but was then tossed into a tub of freezing cold water while this lady rubs her hands all over my person.... I was then given a warm body wrap with banana leaves complete with a hair treatment. After about 20 minutes i was clothed with a kimono style robe (no tie) and told to go wash off in the ocean. This would have been fine if it were an easy venture but climbing down a questionable staircase, caked in what must have looked like warrior paint, in front of a populated restaurant, on a beach filled with people and nothing but giant rocks... I was sent to wash off in the ocean which was more like being tossed around like a naked rag doll for all to see. I survived, though partially clothed and less skin on my right knee than when I had started the day. I wanted to make another appointment for something less adventurous but was told I wouldn't like anything and that i should attend the free sweat lodge instead. I went back to the cabana to rest on the bed swing..... finally some peace.
Cabana #11....The tub leaked like all over the floor from the bottom seam, wooden rail outside came crashing down on me while I was sun bathing on the patio, two of the doors were nailed shut and some strange liquid dripped from the ceiling and stained all of out light clothes, which were hanging in the closet( there is not a top to protect what is inside), with some strange orangish goo. Which WILL NOT wash out with any type of detergent or bleach. To top it off the maids stole all of my white tank tops.

Room Tip: Cabana 12 or beach cabana 14 are great.

“Could be so much better....Not worth the money.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

This place has so much potential, but falls short due to poor upkeep and Management.

You must know what you're getting into before spending your money here. Disappointments aside, this is an "eco-friendly" resort. Meaning no electricity. So, there is a certain degree of "roughing it" in play.
However, when paying what we paid per night (about $290), one should not have to rough it as hard. The website boasts "luxury" all over the place and the pictures definitely make you think it will be. But it's not.

SERVICE:
When we first arrived, we waited in the Lobby/Hut for about 30 minutes for someone to help us, but nobody was in sight. We finally grabbed a cleaning person and asked if they could help us. She went looking for the lobby workers, but couldn't find them. So, we left for awhile, and got a bite to eat and came back. The lobby worker was there and couldn't find our reservation in his high-tech paper planner he had to keep track of everything. After making some phone calls, he says he found it and took us to our cabana. Confusion aside, he was very nice and friendly. We were told there is a complimentary breakfast included with the price. There's not. Unless you call walking next door to the Zahara, where they provide you with a piece of toast and 1 drink breakfast. Because of all the great restaurants around, we opted not get any room service. Housekeeping will come in and clean daily which was nice....but I am 100% certain my sandals were stolen.

ROOMS/SLEEP QUALITY:
Our 1st cabana was dreadful. The ceiling fan was broken and hanging, the wood in the whole place was scratched and banged up, the toilet did not work, and there was blood all over the bedsheets and mosquito netting. We complained, and the worker says that he took us to the wrong cabana, (so he says). The second hut was better. #12. The tallest hut looking over the ocean. It was much cleaner and not nearly as beat up (but still not what the website looks like).
The cabanas are very cool. I totally felt like I was in Swiss Family Robinson. Expect what the website shows, just older and worn out. Absolutely INCREDIBLE view. Our jaws dropped when we saw it. We were quite happy with this hut change for the sheer location right on top of the beach looking over the ocean. There is seriously nothing better than sitting in a tub with a drink looking over the ocean with a book. View our pics.
We went in July and it was hotter than hell. During the day, it's not so bad because you can open up the Cabana's big swinging the doors facing the water and let the breeze roll in. But therein lies the problem. You cannot keep these doors open at night because you will be swarmed by Mosquitoes and Bugs. And if you cover yourself in mosquito netting, the breeze won't get to you. So you have a choice, A) Be covered in bug bites and get no sleep. B) Sweat profusely and get no sleep. Not to mention keeping the doors open means iguanas wander into the room and crap all over the place.
Also, unless you bring your own Lanterns and lots of flashlights, being in the hut at night is pointless. They provide you with candles, but if the doors are open the wind immediately blows them out.
But to us, the biggest drawback of these rooms is there is NO CLEAN WATER. The water that comes out of the tubs and sinks is salt water. And if you've ever bathed in saltwater before, you don't exactly feel clean afterwards. They give you a container of Purified water for drinking, but we found ourselves bathing in this water. After 4 days and nights of sweating and sweating and adventuring around Tulum, we were pretty filthy.

LOCATION:
As said before, the view atop the rocks looking over the water is like paradise. Ridiculously awesome. Our hut had attached stairs that gave us special beach access. Which would have been great if the beach was worth using. It's very small and there was so much brown seaweed on the shore and all over the place I felt like I was back in Galveston. You'd think they'd have someone designated to clean that up. There's minimal seating, luckily it wasn't too crowded. But it is bathing suit optional.....which was interesting.
The hut Being right on the rocks above the shore isn't always a good thing. Because that means anyone has access to your hut. My wife was sleeping outside on the swinging bed (which is great BTW) because she couldn't take the heat inside at night. I was woken up in the morning to my scantily clad wife on the patio covering herself in covers trying to talk to 4 Mexican Soldiers holding M-16s. Apparently she was awoken by them nudging her and speaking very fast Spanish. I walked out there and they wrapped it up and continued on. The lobby guy said the Army patrols the shores for the Sea Turtle Conservation. I call BS. They took advantage of a sleeping blonde chick. Added a little excitement to our getaway.

In conclusion:
If this place was cheaper it would be the greatest place ever. But totally NOT worth what you're paying. My wife and I are no softies. We love camping and roughing it. But not for nearly $300/night.

But Tulum is so much fun and when life hands you crap you make Crapenaid. If I ever go back to Azulik it will be for no more than 1 night.

“possibly the best cabana expierence to be had, but...very over priced”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2012

just got back from azulik and felt compelled to review. first, when looking over trip advisors reviews you need the correct perspective. people that can spend 300 bucks a night probably have been to some pretty nice hotels, best service, restaurants, etc .But, if you look at azulik purely from a dollars vs. deluxe angle it fails. this properties existence absolutely relies on the unique cabana/beach,experience. in that, it's truly hard to imagine a better cabana on the beach. Views are magnificent, beach is not the absolute best but very nice, spacious. pretty clean and still pretty decent shape considering their age and the fact that they take such a beating from the sea,(I've personally never seen one that didn't appear a bit tired) but the fact is the cabana on the beach experience in not for everybody. and going into it thinking dollars vs. deluxe it would be very easy to be disappointedd, they're not super cush, or quiet, or weather tight.or wind free, or salt air free, or bug free, or even lizard free for that matter. FWI. they're a cabana, on the beach, in the jungle with no electricity, it is what it is. what they do offer is, to a certain of person, probaby close to, if not the best of a certain type of accomodation.
that said the problem is, and this will take just a little explaining, tulum itself ,it's growth, and laws, I've been going there 9 years and even since then the changes are amazeing, back then probably 3/4 of the "hotel zone" were cabanas and azulik was at the top of the food chain. since then a number of changes have occured, Major growth and Laws prohibiting certain types of constuction appear to be changeing and cabanas are not the only choice anymore and that's brought some competetion in this price range, but the priceing still reflects it's once top of the food chain prestige. Honestly, i've been to numorous properties on this stretch of beach and value has never been one of it's virtues, but sadly for azulik 300 bucks does now get you much more modern/comfortable digs.
all in all we had a really good time with virtually no issues with the property/service itself but no way can i personally justify the cost.

“Grossly overpriced”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2011

We stayed in the Honeymoon Villa in September 2011. We stayed in Tulum for eight days, and we stayed at two other hotels on the beach prior to staying at Azulik. I'd HIGHLY recommend the other two we stayed at - Posada del Sol and Playa Mambo - over Azulik. We planned our trip so that we'd stay at Azulik last and for the longest stretch of our trip because, based off the website, we thought it looked the most luxurious.

We paid about $260 per night for the accommodations, and that was a total rip off. For that price, it should have been as luxurious as the photos on the website. Instead, it just wasn't that great. The finishes on all the surfaces were scratched and peeling. (Especially tacky in the bathtubs.) That's to be expected when the place is perched over the water, but it shouldn't cost $260 per night and be touted as a luxury establishment when it's not. There were also spots of dried blood on the mosquito net (probably from dead mosquitos). There was a problem with the water supply during our last night and the water was shut off from around midnight until late morning the next day. (Read: non-working toilet.) Also, like every other establishment we went to in Tulum, the water wasn't fresh--it was a salt/fresh mixture. Not complaining, just advising travelers to know what to expect. (For $260 per night there should be fresh water, I think.)

The view is amazing. Can't beat it. And the villa is pretty private. In my opinion, either the rooms should be completely refinished with some luxury touches, or the price should go down by about $150 bucks. We paid about $100 per night at the other two places we stayed and they were much nicer.

A little about the sleep quality - it sucked, but that's not the fault of the establishment. It was just really, really hot and there were tons of mosquitos. If you go in September, go armed with every type of bug repellent you can buy!

“Will go back but know what to expect”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 December 2011

My wife and I stayed here for five nights at the end of September. It was our honeymoon and we both wanted a place to getaway without internet and all of the things that tie us to our businesses. The Azulik definetely met out needs in that category. It was quite slow when we were there and I would guess at most there was three of the cabanas used on any given day. We had the honeymoon cabana and loved it for the most part. When we arrived the first day we were immediately in love with the place, the views are amazing and the sound of the sea relaxing.

I do agree with many others that the place is expensive for what you get. I do feel that a price of around $180/night would be more in line than our $299 for the honeymoon cabana. There is not much for service but you really don't need it either. Each morning they came around 10:00 and cleaned the cabana and gave us new towels and bedding. The girl that did this was very polite and thorough about her job. We did order room service a couple of times and that also was very prompt and the food wasn't great but wasn't bad either.

The one issue we had was sleeping. It seems that the mosquito's would come in waves starting around 11:00 at night and no matter how hard we tried, it still seemed that a few would get under the net. The other issue we had with sleeping was that it was very warm in the cabana, I would actually go sleep on the swing bed on the deck most nights but you can imagine the mosquitoes there.

The beach, we spent every day on the small beach to the south of our cabana, we never did find out how to get to the main one on the north end of the property. The beaches are nearly empty and we did elect on most days to do the C/O but stayed near our cabana so we had more privacy. We absolutely loved the beach and can't wait to be back there again.

To try and end this review, please know these things. 1. You are not staying at a five star all-inclusive resort, you are staying at a beautiful cabana right on the ocean that does not have electricity at night. 2. Prepare when you go here, bring flashlights, mosquito repellant, coooler, and battery operated fans. 3. You must take the happiness of your vacation into your own hands, the more prepared you are, the happier you will be.

We loved it and we will be back but we will be more prepared next time.

Room Tip: We loved the honeymoon suite and will stay there again.
