My husband & I stayed at the Cabanas Copal in February 2009. We try to travel somewhere new every year, because there is so much of the world to see, but after spending 4 days here, we agreed there is no way we can only visit once. It is paradise.
ok, so specifics:
The Room - It was perfect in it's authenticity. We were supplied with plenty of drinking water, all the linens were clean and abundant, the mosquito net was nice, but unnecessary, the shower was fine. A bathroom door would've been a plus, but the shower curtain worked well enough. A warning about the shower: We stayed in Cabana 10 & I'm not sure if the layout is the same for all, but there are 2 steep cement stairs leading up to the bathroom & the shower is positioned in such a way that if any water escapes, the stairs get wet. My husband suffered a minor ankle injury after he fell down them our first night.
The Beach - It is breathtakingly beautiful. I grew up in Florida, but I've never seen a beach like this. The surf is calm, the atmosphere is calm, and there is an air of peace and freedom that is magnificent. There are rocks in the water toward Azulik (coquina, I guess) so be careful how far you drift. My husband & I had to stumble out of the water, which may have been embarrassing if any of our fellow beach bums were paying attention to us, rather than being caught up in their own personal experience. Upon our return to sand, we noticed there were all sorts of cool rock sculptures on the beach in front of Azulik. We liked. The beach bar is cool. My favorite thing about it is happy hour & the fact the staff will deliver my rum punch to my spot on the soft white sand. At night, it is easy to understand why the Mayans were such great astronomers. I never knew what I was missing in the night sky until my visit to Copal. One night we fell asleep on the beach after a bottle of Chilean wine we scored in the on-site restaurant. We were relieved to wake up & find a security guard watching over us! DO NOT MISS the sunrise. It is second to none. It's actually easy to wake up early here for some reason. I never slept past 8 am the entire trip & believe me, I am no early riser.
The Restaurant - It's decent. Service is slow by US standards. Our favorite feature was the bar with swings. Breakfast is probably the best meal to have here. The fresh fruit & smoothies are a great way to start the day & I have been trying to recreate the chilaquiles since we returned home. I would say it is a tad overpriced, but everything cost a bit more than we had anticipated. Do exchange dollars for pesos, or else you are getting ripped off.
The Spa - We both had massages. I was disappointed when we were led to the jungle massage area, rather than the oceanfront tables. It wasn't quite as serene as it could've been since I could hear cars pull into the parking lot, but hey...it's an open air massage in the middle of the jungle - how bad could it be? I'd pay $50 again in a heartbeat. We also checked out the temazcal ceremony. It started off really cool & I was feeling all spiritual in the hut until we were in complete darkness with blazing hot lava rocks. My paranoid, claustrophobic side took over & I had to ask to leave. I immediately regretted doing so as I sat outside waiting for my husband. The ceremony sounded so intense and he described it as "transformative". Maybe next time I can conquer my fear.
The Shopping - We rented a scooter at the front desk (I recommend) and traveled into Tulum Pueblo. This was my least favorite part of the trip, as it brought back the realities of modern city life & some of the vendors were quite pushy. If you visit, please go into the store called "Ambar Jewelry". The shop owner handcrafts everything & it is beautiful! He is very nice & the items are reasonably priced. Perhaps I will go back, only to his store.
On our last night, I found the greatest little shop right next to Zahra on the beach road. It had all sorts of artsy items that felt one of a kind. I probably spent an hour in there.
Speaking of Zahra, the bar is hoppin at night & we met some great people there.
The Ruins - were really amazing. Don't miss them. Bring water & sunscreen.
I know it's been said that this experience in rustic accommodations isn't for everyone, but why not? It should be. The simplicity is a luxury. It's a calm oasis from the chaos of modern life. It's renewing. On the beach road, we passed several gigantic, all-inclusive monstrosities & I felt repulsed by them. They were disgustingly out of place in this otherwise undisturbed tropical paradise. If you are unsure whether or not to stay here, Do it! You won't be sorry. As a full-time corporate desk-jockey with 5 children at home, this place was just what I needed to discover in life. I wish I was there right now. I will be returning asap.
