My partner likes to say: we don't pick our destination, it picks us. As was the case with Adonis Tulum, we were simply searching for a vacation in the Caribbean area. We found this resort, and were pretty excited, especially after reading reviews on the property, specifically (which we didn't know) was when the property was called Blue Tulum.
This gay market thing is new for this property, number one. Aside from who they are targeting to bring on site, they don't do much here. Only one staff member we spoke with was gay, and they have no activities on site. They do some club music out of a single speaker by the pool bar during the day, but that's about it.
We loved our room with a couple exceptions. The "ocean view" was not so much. It was barely visible from the patio through very overgrown landscape. This was somewhat addressed one of the days we were there, but even then, it was loud and intrusive and they still didn't clear enough brush to give a view. Our room did have a Jacuzzi on the patio, but the thing took over an hour to fill up, and twice upon filling, the water wasn't very hot. Lastly on the room, the beds are really firm. While this may work for some people, it didn't create a comfortable sleep for me (my partner sleeps great on firm mattresses, so worked for him). My shoulder is still recovering from sleeping on my side on that bed. One good in the room was the iPod docked alarm clock. Awesome, because while there are nice television sets in the rooms, the channel selection is aweful for non-spanish speakers. Another good in the room was the decor was nice, and we felt at home most of the time. I wasn't a fan of the thin doors / walls / something. Got quite loud in the mornings, again contributing to disturbing sleep patterns. The bathroom, however, is gorgeous! Beautifully appointed, comfortable, and the safe was easy to use. The mini-bar: never refilled unless asked, but that was okay because the only alcohol that goes in it is if you provide your own (aka it gives you room).
The restaurant situation is bizarre. They claim 3 restaurants, you don't get them. You get a lower level "Globe" for breakfast / lunch => buffet with some hot options to order. The coffee is good and the juice plentiful. Dinner is one menu with two sides (english / spanish) and was the same for the 6 days we were there. We found the food not to be high end, but really good! While some reviews claim problems with "training" etc, we loved the food. Everything was cooked well, and the options and timing were well provided. We never ate a single meal off-site. The service was phenomenal. While the "black or negro" question on the coffee got old after day two and the pat responses to our Thank You's got annoying, we still found the staff to be playful, responsive, and always there with your anticipated next need.
Location location location! This place has fabulous grounds with amazing views. While some have complained about the capacity, we found this aspect to be quite enduring. We made many friends hanging out there, both straight and gay (about a 40 / 60 split, as others have alluded to). People joined others for meals, readily shared experiences, etc. This sense of community really helped with the atmosphere.
That same sense also helped us get things off our chest.
* The bar / disco: no requests .. same thing over and over - and they played all slow beat music all Saturday night! They do this weird movie thing before opening, but they don't advertise it!
* Spa: way overpriced for Mexico (I get better pricing in the Chicago area), and they don't negotiate. This and the on property "store" are concessions, so the resort has no control, but share your opinion if you want this to change.
* Hot tub pagoda (public): EWW! These things were cold and gross. One day they were hot, if you call 102 hot. Also, for the four that are in the cluster, they never had more than two filled.
Aside from it's oddities, you will love it. Learn to relax and take a few steps back, and you'll have a great time. The property is gorgeous, the food is good, but the details need to be better attended to make it amazing. Hopefully the new managers coming in (literally while we stayed) will make this place live up to its potential.
