Overall, aside from the gorgeous room, my stay was extremely disappointing. The room rates are so high, which makes it even more awful that there were so many flaws in the hotel and food quality. This is a long list, but just goes to show how disappointing it was that we chose this hotel for our vacation.
-As of mid February 2012, there is CONSTRUCTION right on the beach property at Rosewood. The hotel is building an outdoor event space adjacent to the pool area. We heard chainsaws and power tools--even my iPod couldn't drown out the noise. I read TripAdvisor reviews that there was construction and, before booking, called the hotel directly to ask if it was still going on. I was told that it was not--which was a LIE--I suppose to just improve revenue and occupancy rates. How awful!! As soon as I heard / saw the construction and it was confirmed by the pool staff, I was so aggravated. I feel so duped by this hotel and because of this will never stay at a Rosewood property again.
-Due to the noise, guests do not want to sit right by the construction, which makes the other end of the beach and pool area very crowded. My lounge chair was always right next to a stranger's chair. This was far from the relaxing beach atmosphere that I look forward to on a vacation.
-The beach is very narrow--maybe about 10 feet in total from where the waves crash to the pool deck area. There is a constant parade of people walking up and down the beach from nearby hotels. Due to the small beach, these people are practically touching your chair. I found this very disturbing and annoying. If you are in a beach villa, expect everyone to also look right into your villa patio and be right at your chair.
-Pools are small and awkwardly designed. The beach pool seems small for a hotel of this size. It was always crowded--almost every seat taken--and also has the kiddie pool. If you aren't traveling with kids, you likely don't want to be near their screams, but there's no way to avoid it. The adult pool is larger and several levels, but it is far from the ocean and is smack in the middle of the hotel restaurant and front desk. Instead of looking at the beach, you have to look at either the restaurant (and people dining are looking out at you) or the front desk area with guests checking in and out.
-Food is very expensive and, overall, horrible. I read previous reviews that the food was good and was looking forward to authentic Mexican cuisine. Instead, I found mass-produced food that seemed like it was all mircowaved. I often took one bite of something and couldn't continue eating it--the meat itself just tasted like it was really poor quality. I tried to change food items on the menu and was told that it was all prepared in advance---even the guac and tacos. Nasty! We had room service and the food was just as poor and prepared incorrectly, but probably the best of the meals I had. Tip: there is a continental buffet breakfast option for $19. The waitstaff will tell you that there is only a $40/person option, but when we asked were given this other option.
-The villas are not private at all. You can see into other villas and plunge pools. A child was in the next villa and I could hear every scream, cry, etc. We even heard the child from inside our room. The villas have the potential to be very romantic, but not with a screaming child or people looking in.
-There are golf carts to take you around the property. This will be needed for most of the rooms, especially those by the gym which are very far from the beach. The larger golf carts are really slow--I could probably slow jog faster than the carts. Being from NYC, I wait for subways and buses all the time. I did not like having to wait at a "cart stop" for one to take me around the property. It was also odd to me that staff would drive right by the "cart stop" and not offer a ride or to call someone else to pick us up.
-Bring your bug spray. There are bugs everywhere--especially by the lagoon.
