“We didn't want to leave!!”

Petit Lafitte is the perfect destination for an amazing vacation for both your mind and body (to be more exact, your stomach, because the food was incredible!)! First and foremost, the staff is what makes the experience an unforgettable one. We were met with a warm smile and a tour of the premises and the theme of a genuine concern for the guests well-being continued throughout our stay. In the five days that we stayed, at least a dozen staff members knew our names, chatted with us as we came and went, and always made sure we were comfortable. We enjoyed the serene surroundings-- no loud music, or late night shows... just an ocean side bar with the best guacamole and cheviche and an open air restaurant which served breakfast just after sunrise until late in the morning and dinner well into the evening. The food was delicious and the choices for meals fit everyones liking. Our garden side bungalo was just what we needed-- provided a rustic feel with clean and comfortable decor. And a note- even the furthest bungalo is only steps from the ocean so if the actual ocean side bungalos are booked, the garden view are as good of an option. The grounds were beautifully kept and the beach front chairs and hammocks were never crowded. I would recommend Petit Lafitte again and again... and we look forward to returning "again" as well. Thanks so much!

Room Tip: All bungalos are just seconds away from the ocean!!

Dear Carolina Home,
Au contraire, Gracias to you for recommending us.
I realize you folks are "food lovers" and your comments could not have been more eloquent.
Thanks.
I am glad you enjoyed the serenity of your Garden View Bungalow, clean decor and convenient location.
Sometimes potential guests on the phone ask me how long a walk from the bungalows to the beach, they want to know how many minutes. I am sure these folks are imagining the scenario of the huge all inclusive resorts that require golf carts to transport people around.
As you say here, we are just a few staep away from the ocean.
Then your mention of how the staff approached service may have been instrumental our receival of an Award by TripAdvisor on the service department.
Once again Thank you.
We will be happy to see you return as you say you may do.

In the meantime, enjoy life and keep us in your thoughts.

Best Regards

“A JEWEL OF A HOTEL”

This hotel (although I would love to keep it a secret so we will always be able to get a room) is without a doubt our favorite hotel of any place we have traveled to (and we travel quite alot). The hotel is simple, nothing fancy, but it has everything you could possibly need and is super clean. But the staff is what makes this hotel special. They are incredible. They refer to you by your name - what other hotel can say that?! They make you feel like you are their friend, which you are! We have been there twice now, and will be going back. It is a jewel among all of the huge all-inclusive horrible places that I would never stay at (I don't care if the booze is included). It is quiet, beautiful grounds, simple, warm, friendly, uncrowded, good simple food, and a wonderful, wonderful staff. WE LOVE THIS PLACE!

Room Tip: All the rooms are good, it depends on what you want. You won't spend much time in your room anyw...

Dear Laurie and Peter.

You guys are sweet!
Of course you are considered friends now. After all, we have been cultivating friendships since the mid 70s. You've been here twice and intend to return, you will soon be considered family!!! , eventhough I don't know if that's a good thing! Ha,ha,ha,ha.

Very honored to hear you consider us your favorite place of all the ones you've traveled to.
(And traveled a lot huh?)
Thank you for reciprocating our friendship and for your loyalty, but more imortantly, thank you for sharing us with others, eventhough you wanted to keep us a secret.
That shows a very loving, giving nature!
We will correspond in kind.

Looking forward to your next visit!

“Our first and definitely not last visit to Lafitte”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

Petit Lafitte is perfection - small, intimate and totally unfussy, warm and friendly to its international and intergenerational group of guests, and with a lovely and uncrowded beach, grounds, delicious food, a loving staff and more than enough creature comforts to make us happy to do little more than rest and renew over the arc of each day. Playa del Carmen is a short ride away and still a lovely town (the un-Cancun), We hired a driver for a day's visit to Coba, Tulum and some still unspoiled small villages. But mostly this was all about enjoying each other and the company of our fellow guests. It's miraculous that Petit Lafitte has remained so true to itself over so many years and to understand the deep affection so many people feel toward it. My only advice is to make certain to read the descriptions of Petit carefully so you are perfectly clear about what Petit Lafitte is and what it isn't ...if you buy the concept, you will absolutely, positively be a happy camper.

Room Tip: The bungalows are lovely; everyone is only steps from the beach.

Dear denitzfamily,

Wow, I am moved by your comments.
I realize that some guests become regulars and develpo a connection to Petit Lafitte, but it is nice to read it in writing.
"Perfection?" ...Wow!!, I guess we are perfectly fine for those of you who are looking for a small place with excellent service, you are right, our staff makes the difference, we value each one of them.
Some have become icons of the pace. (Like David or Jesus).
It is nice you point out about Cobá and Tulum, I imagine that some readers may not know that these magnificent Archeological sites are just around and hour and 20 min (Coba) and 50 min (Tulum) .
Thank you for your comments and "Hasta La Vista"

Warm Regards

“Perfect relaxing vacation!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

I just got back from my trip yesterday, and Petit Lafitte was everything I expected and more. Like others have said, you have to know what you're expecting here. My friend and I stayed in a standard garden view room, which was perfectly located between the beach and the open air dining area where breakfast and dinner is served everyday. The room was simple and very clean, and had a lovely patio where you could sit and enjoy the view. If you're looking for luxury amenities and nightlife, this isn't for you (I'm pretty sure my friend and I were the only singles at the hotel. This wasn't an issue for us, but it was hard not to notice all the couples). If you're looking for a place to unwind and relax, this is perfect. I didn't have a single worry while I was there. The food was good, with plenty of variety. Breakfast was outstanding. If you go, definitely book a massage on the beach, it was amazing! The stretch of beach in front of the hotel is beautiful, I think the nicest in the area, and there was never an issue of finding a beach chair.
I can't say enough about the staff, who really made the place feel more like someone's home than a hotel. For the value, especially, I couldn't have imagined anything better. I hope to be back soon!

Dear lawgirl78,
Thank you so much for your lovely review,
You are absolutely right when you mention that people have to know what they are expecting and not have "mis-expectations." We are a three star hotel after all, however we are certainly proud to be pionneers on Riviera Maya. (we were actually here since the early 70's some 20 years before the name Riviera Maya, was coined). So we are about rustic elegance, service, very good to excellent food. Fresh produce, good trustworthy staff and values.
From your comments it seems that we are still providing what we wished to provide in the beginning.
Thank you for your comments on our beach, food and service.
They give readers a vision of what they can expect.
we appreciate your business and the nice comments. Hopefully, as you mention on your review, we will meet again in the future.

Take good care.

Sincerely,

Iván A. Fuentes

“reviews need to be more accurate”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

We looked forward to our first trip to Mexico and to this hotel based on the reviews. Whilst conscious it was 3 star, the reviews gave the impression that the food, staff, surroundings exceeded the 3 star rating. We were disappointed. When we were there there was a dispute with the immediate private residential neighbor. Loud music played with outside speakers from 7am to 11pm. Not the hotels fault you say? No attempt to advise hotel guests about the issue and what they were doing about it. We had to ask after enduring it for two days. The resident had even built up piles of rubbish outside his house, guests from other hotels walking along the beach were stopping to take pictures! When we asked what was happening, we were offered a room in the apartment block. We declined as we had paid for the ocean front beach hut and there were 5 of us. Sorry we cannot do anymore we were told. Other people moved and luckily the hotel was not full. Okay bad timing you say, after 4 days it stopped, then we felt the quiet and fantastic views of the ocean begin to take over. Queue the staff to pick up the service that they were famous for, nope just fine and polite nothing above standard. The pool was a nice break from the windy ocean front, bit chilly mind. The food. Really people? Come on - whilst the options were great (one day main course options were 2 types of fish, wtf?) it was okay. The breakfast was the best for options and amount you could have. Ignore the whiners about the road, its fine. I would agree with bungalow 1, don't take it as its the main thoroughfare to beach front and next to the toilets. Family friendly? Just about, in fact if it was not for the oceanfront, we would have picked another resort. Still surprised at the number of WOW reviews, almost too good to be true and you know what they say about that! It clearly works from a marketing point of view and good luck to the management for getting it that right, maybe we were elevated to the heightened frenzy by other reviews and let down when we got there? I ask my fellow reviewers to be realistic please.

Room Tip: Not backing on to the restaurant and definitely not bungalow 1

Ivan Fuentes, Manager at Petit Lafitte, responded to this review
9 February 2012
Hello Canada Scott,
I would like to respond to your review, first by saying Thank you for taking the time to write it.
It is so important to have feedback that allows the hotels and properties to improve their services and also help the readers and travelers make the best of their vacations.
Second, I would like to ask:
why did it take you one year to write it? or
Why did you leave that piece of information out while writing it?

It is evident you felt misguided by the "Wow reviews." I hope you are aware that your review may misguide potential clients, simply because you (I hope unintentionally) omitted to mention that you were here in FEBRUARY 2011. A year ago!
I believe you have the right to question the reviews of others on this site, after all, they are there to be evaluated by new readers, they are not supposed to posses the "absolute truth," hopefully they serve as instruments that help others making travel plans. I am sure the majority of readers, visiting TRIPADVISOR, know that the reviews only depict individual points of view of a particular traveler. So as long as everyone knows that, each review deserves validation.
Independet to all that, I am very sorry that you, as well as a lot of other guests, had a rough week back then. I feel compelled to comment on the topics in order to shed some light on the issues.

DISPUTE WITH NEIGHBORS,
Yes it is true, our neighbors, kind of prominent, bullying types, decided that it was our obligation to provide them with an access to their property, they requested that we build a road through the hotel so they can access their beach front house. Well they were wrong to expect (and demand) that, but they decided to give it a shot, the hard way, exactly as you put it : Noise, trash... I was forced to attend several, long hearings I invested hours of work and energy. that ended when the authorities ruled on the case, (in our favor) and offered our neighbors solutions to their problem. As you precisely point out, the situation ended 4 days into your visit. Fair to reiterate that I was spending many hours of my manager time to handle this situation and was neglecting some of the day to day operation decisions. Being a family owned an operated resort, I had no choice but to leave the hotel in the hands of other management staff that, while diligent and hard working, made some errors, like neglecting talking with you about the issue and the way we were handling the situation. That was not the case for all guests. I am sorry it happened to you.
The good news is that in recent months we hired a very capable and smart young man to occupy the operations manager seat (which I was covering) . We realize how helpful it would have been then to have him, during that time of trouble.

THE FOOD,
We are very careful with menu planning and we provide two options of entrees at dinner every night, except when we serve buffet style (twice a week) where we offer 4 entrees. We ensure that the options are varied. I was wondering what may have happened that night you say we had two types of fish. The only thing I can imagine is that some supplier did not deliver the other meat for the other option, which, by design, would have been beef, pork or chicken. I'd say the chef was forced to work with what he had at hand. I wondered if you talked to our head waiter or the concierge, I am sure we would have been able to provide one or two portions of another type of meat. (They did not do that for all the guests, because they did not have enough to cover half the number of guests). Our staff is trained to do stuff like that. We even accomodate, (other reviewers have mentioned this) dietary restrictions and needs. We are trained to provide options that please the guests.
Another thing worth noting here is that, being a 47 room hotel, we do not have a walk-in cold room, (nor do we want one) we buy fresh produce (or as fresh as we can get ) in small amounts. We have been told that our food tastes fresh and I personally believe that the way we do it, has a very possitive impact on the final dish.
So far, guests seem to agree with that.

Thank you for telling "the whiners who complain about the road," that it is fine, but unfortunately, today, a year after your visit, the road is not fine and we are preparing to fix it. Winter rains have damaged it.
You see? Things change in a year !
(Dear readers, do not worry about it though, te problem exists on an unpaved section of about a 100 yards, the road into the hotel is about 1.5 miles, all of which is paved, except for that 100 yards in question. We are already working on it)

Before signing off, I would like to address that asking the reviewers to be more realistic, implies that they are not... Well... another option is possibly that they lack the ability to see things clearly. In either case, not a compliment to them. Another possibility and this is what I prefer, is that, perhaps, these reviewers had, opposite to you, a delightful experience during their vacation at Petit Lafitte.

My sincere thankfulness to them for their input and praise and to you, the best of luck on future travels.

Sincerely

Ivan Fuentes
