If you wish to go to the Mayan Riviera in order to lounge by a luxurious pool for a week, the Mayan Palace or Grand Mayan is your goal. The HUGE pool, consisting of many sections, is the largest I've ever seen. Acres large. There are plenty of good chairs, over a hundred palapas, and shade or sun, your choice. Waiters are pretty efficient and bringing drinks and the food comes in 30 minutes or so after ordering. In short, this aspect of the Mayan can't be beat.
There are several restaurants and we liked them all. The Balche, right by the pool, has very fine Mexican cuisine and the corn chowder is tops. For a huge feast, try the Del Lago for buffet excellence but bring an appetite. It is a lot to pay for a small appetite. The two dress-up places (a wide variety of dress is acceptable but classy is best) are up there in price by Midwestern standards but not for resort prices. The Gong has superb oriental food and while we didn't go to Tramanto, I heard that the Italian food was very good. But the best kept secret as far as food is concerned is the tiny cafe off the second floor of Brio, the exercise building. It features wholesome food, brown breads, shakes and smoothies of all natural ingredients and by far the healthiest choices. No bathing suits there, but shorts are fine. They are open for breakfast and lunch.
All of this is why we gave it a 5-star rating. Add to this, their VERY fine staff of smiling people and it deserves this category. It is true that several times, we were given wrong information: times when the restaurant opened, taxi policies, etc. It's a very big place and occasionally one hand doesn't know what the other hand is doing. We always reported this to the concierge in the hopes it would get fixed. There isn't any orientation either, so grab the map and explore. It is quite a complex which includes higher level facilities for the Grand Mayan and Grand Lux high rollers.
The negatives? We stayed in a suite - two bedrooms, a livingroom which also housed the kitchenette and the diningroom table. The furniture was worn and stained and the beds were rocks. We are timeshare owners, and have raised this issue with management. Every 5 years, these rooms are remodeled and they need to do a serious upgrade, particularly with the mattresses. Because our little kids were messy at times, we understood the dirty chairs. They just need to make their livingrooms easier to maintain and be religious about it. Take a small paring knife, dishtowels, at least a couple of bathing suits and cover-ups (nothing ever dries here) and have a budget of at least $150@ for food, drinks and tokens (wash and dry is $8). As with most resorts, this is a cashless system. EVERYTHING is charged to your room number and hence, your credit card. We settled up every 5 days or so and double-checked our charges. They were accurate.
We were there for 10 of our 14 days with two grandchildren, ages 1 and 3. This place is not at all kid-proofed. We ran constantly to avoid accidents, particularly in the water. They have several "kid pools" but they all have dangerous drop-offs into either 3-foot water (hence the danger to the 1 year-old) or 4 foot pools, a danger to the 3 year-old. It would not be hard to fix this. Dedicate one whole pool to 8" water for the hassled and frazzled parents of little ones. They tore down the only playground while we were there and replaced it with a one-hole putt-putt with large metal golf clubs - totally unsuitable for the toddler group. I suspect that they are trying to make this into an adult facility but good luck with that. The timeshare owners have both kids and grandkids and there were hundreds of them there. Mayan management needs to seriously re-think their policies and give the young parents a break, not to mention us creaky old people.
We will mostly likely return, either to this Mayan Palace or to one of the others. Even though it rained most every day, we also had sun for the best part of the morning and early afternoon and it was deliciously warm. We came back to Michigan at 6 degrees and miss the penetrating heat.
The parasailing was great. It is not at all taxing (note seniors) and it is very peaceful and quiet at 150 feet. We highly recommend it at $75 per person. It's a nice long ride as well, 20 minutes or so.
There is a professional photographer there. We had a complete photo shoot with my daughter, her sister-in-law, the two children and us. The shots are to die for. They are pricey for a few ($30@) but very reasonable for 30 ($600). If you want something special to buy down there, ask for Andre and get a photo-shoot. He is superb.
In short, this is a fine place to stay in most respects. If you are taking very tiny children, prepare to be tired and vigilant. They do have very good babysitters at $20/hr. for two kids, and we had a quiet dinner out one evening. We will return.
