My husband and I just spent 5 days/4 nights at Secrets Capri and we would rate it in the top 5 of the 25+ all-inclusives (mostly in Mexico) that we've been to over the past 17 years. We would rate all aspects very good to excellent with the exception of the water entry/ocean floor right in front of the hotel. I'll summarize our experience by category.
Check-in/check-out/front desk: Check-in was very fast and efficient. The employee who helped us was very amiable and seemed to really care about accommodating our room request. I registered on www.iprefer.com (saw that on a previous trip advisor review) and brought a printout of the registration to check-in for a free upgrade to a junior suite. We were offered champagne and bottled water as we checked in. One caution: as you are completing the check-in process, you are told that the concierge will meet with you to give you coupons and ...I don't even remember what else. I told her emphatically that we were not interested in any timeshare presentation and she very nicely said OK and that was all we heard about timeshare the whole time we were there. The front desk employees were always prompt and friendly when we stopped by with any questions. Check-out went well too. It took 3-4 minutes (and that included filling out a survey about our stay).
Room: The junior suite was large and well-furnished. The king bed (4 pillows) was comfortable and the air conditioning worked well. There was only one bedside lamp so reading in bed was a bit challenging for the person without the lamp. The bathroom was good-sized and the shower had good pressure and plenty of hot water. Lots of toiletries were provided, including conditioning shampoo, conditioner and SPF15 sunscreen. Even washcloths were stocked. Oddly, a hair dryer was not provided. We stayed in the north wing of suites, but I would recommend requesting a room in the south wing because the main service path (for food carts, towel bins, etc.) goes through and by the north wing. It was definitely a little noisy at times.
Cleanliness/housekeeping/turn-down service: The grounds of the hotel, the rooms, the restaurants, and really everything was spotless. There seemed to be an abundance of employees working to keep everything clean. Housekeeping did a thorough job and even provided a form for us to specify our preferred room cleaning time. Turn-down service was sporadic and offered at a variety of odd times (5:45 PM one night, 9:45 PM another).
Food: The food was definitely of a higher quality than at most all-inclusives we've been to. The breakfast buffet had dozens and dozens of choices, including a daily “Mexican Corner” with chilaquiles, refried beans, small tostadas, mini burritos, quesadillas, etc. We had lunch at the Barefoot Grill buffet right by the beach (burgers, hot dogs, ribs, salads, chips, pico de gallo, etc) or at the Cactus Club a la carte right by the beach (tacos, ceviche, sandwiches, salads). Both were very good. No reservations are required for dinner at the a la carte restaurants. We ate dinner at Oceana (our favorite) and Himitsu. One night there were 45 minute waits at both Oceana and the Seaside Grill so we decided to try La Riviera buffet for dinner. It was excellent. Everything was delicious and the presentation was impressive. We used room service once (to get sandwiches to take with us for our trip home) and it was very fast – less than 20 minutes.
Beach/water entry/ocean floor: The beach was very nice – soft white sand, plenty of large palapas and lounge chairs with abundant space between them (so you didn't feel like a sardine). It is probably not as deep (from the water's edge to the landscaped portion of the resort grounds) as it was before the hurricane 3 months ago, but to us it was perfectly fine. The beach waiters were always there to bring drinks and even food from the Cactus Club. We never went thirsty or hungry. The drinks were larger than at most AIs and they were served in reusable hard plastic glasses rather than the small flimsy disposable cups that is the norm. Because of the hurricane damage, the entry into the water is rocky and uneven (water shoes are recommended) and the ocean floor seems like a mud flat. The bottom does get better about 20 yards out, but even there the water is still quite murky.
Pools: The pools were very clean and uncrowded. The pool has 2 sides; the swim-up bar side was heated but the other side was not. There were plenty of foam floats for those who wanted them.
Entertainment staff: The entertainment staff was genuinely friendly but not pushy to get people to participate in activities. The daily newsletter listed activities and times and people who wanted to participate in a given activity just showed up. There were not constant announcements which was nice. A nice variety of current music (at a reasonable volume) was played by the pool. The absence of loud, throbbing music made for a relaxing atmosphere.
Nightly shows: The 4 nightly shows we saw were all “professional” acts brought in from outside the resort. We saw a stand-up comedian from New Jersey, a local break dancing troupe, a local Mayan dance troupe and a local group that performed a fire dancing show. The comedian and the break dancing were quite loud; we used earplugs. All were enjoyable and a cut above the usual AI entertainment team performing nightly shows, as happens at most resorts.
Hotel staff: There seemed to be a high ratio of staff to guests which meant that nothing was left undone. All were friendly and appeared to be working hard. All employees who interacted with guests had a good to excellent command of English.
Internet: Wifi was free and apparently had a decent signal in the lobby. We accessed the wired internet in our room by using an ethernet cable. Speed was pretty good.
Miscellaneous:
*You don't have to wear bracelets at this resort.
*There are no towel cards; you can take as many towels as you want to. There were always plenty available.
*The resort seemed to get more crowded as the weekend approached.
*We didn't have any problems with mosquitoes or flies.
*The Lobby Bar or Desires Lounge seemed to be the places to be in the evenings.
*There were board games available in Desires Lounge.
*There was a small library of books in The Lounge.
*There was a cart right outside of The Lounge every evening where you could get flaming coffees.
We had a great time at Secrets Capri and would have loved to stay a couple more days. It is one resort that we would actually go back to – and we don't say that very often because we like to try new places.
