Let's get the negative out of the way first - the beach was disappointing - but the hotel isn't responsible for the hurricane that spoiled it and I'm sure it will be rectified as soon as possible. I personally would have liked a better mattress but's that's probably due to my age (65+). We also had a leaky shower and the dates are right for Berlin Dublin to have followed us into the room (2704?). That said everything else was wonderful. The accommodation is in villas consisting of 8 rooms set in beautifully maintained gardens. We were in a basic room, that is Premier as opposed to Privilege, and it was very well equipped. All of the staff - reception, catering, housekeeping, gardeners and the animation team were very friendly and helpful. The food was good in all of the restaurants but especially the buffet where there was so much choice and they never seemed to run out even on the few occasions when we were late. The pool scene was pretty lively and the evening entertainment quite good - what we saw of it as our days were so active we were shattered. The beach wasn't so bad that we couldn't swim in the sea and we did so almost every day. A couple of times we walked along the beach to where the underground river emerges and runs into the sea. This was great fun. You just lie back and the current carries you out towards the sea (there is a barrier to stop you floating away) or you can 'ride' it and pretend to be an olympic swimmer. This being our first trip to Mexico we did several excursions, Si'an Kaan, Chichen itza where we were able to swim in a cenote and, finally, the Dolphin Push. We took the bus to the beautiful Akumel. Sadly, Playa del Carmen was not the chic boutiques and restaurants we were expecting, in truth it was a bit scruffy. (Nice beach though). This was the first time we had stayed in an adults only hotel and must say it was lovely and quiet apart from a party of very noisy Americans who, fortunately, had only come for a long weekend. All in all a wonderful holiday, great value for money and we would definitely return to this hotel.
