“Decent but loud”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2010

Hotel Cohiba was a clean stay but with a few disappointments. The TV didn't work, there were a few bugs in the bathroom (it is Mexico but its also >$70 a night). My major disappointment was that it was so loud. I can party but loud club music thumping into the room until at least 3 am was a bit much. Everyone was nice and helpful but not necessarily effective. The location is quite central, one block from 5th avenue, the main food/shopping/clubbing street of Playa del Carmen.

“Great price and locationi”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 December 2009

First, the pictures you see of the room with thatched roof are of the only room in the hotel that looks like this, and it looks nice but is really hot - so don't book that one, looks are deceiving.
We stayed in a room on the 3rd floor. The room was decent, AC worked, the only thing was our balcony faced another building, so no good views. The only way to have a good view is to go to the top floor, beautiful view indeed.
The location is the best part - you're at the corner of two busy streets with clubs and bars at each corner. If you plan on sleeping before early morning, forget it. Noise is permeating, so please bring industrial-style earplugs. On the other hand you can crawl home after a night of heavy drinking and still get to bed before sunrise. The beach is a block off. The lounge area is stylish.
Service was good.
Overall, great experience, the place is nice, cozy and has the Caribbean thing going.

“budget accommodation”

The hotel is located right in the middle of Playa's nightlife area, so don't go there if you want quiet nights, as music is blasting loud from the nearby clubs until 4AM.
I took the "lounge" room, right at the top, with seaview terrace. The decor is lovely, rustic, there are no windows in this big room though. There was a kitchenette, but I had to ask for a fridge, which was taken from another room, the aircon wasn't that effective in cooling the room, probably because the palapa roof isn't providing insulation. The bathroom door kept jamming and required brutal force to be opened.
The worst thing was the stench in the bathroom: a permanent smell of sewage coming from the pipes: yuk! Continental breakfast was quite a joke: a thermos of watery coffee and 2 slices of bread with strawberry jam or... strawberry jam. No juice, no fruit, nothing else than bread and coffee. There's free internet, but it's not accessible from the rooms, only from the lobby and the restaurant. The staff was lovely, the room clean, location just perfect if you go to Playa to enjoy the nightlife.

“Just okay”

The rooms were clean and the housekeeping made us beautiful towel swans each day. The front desk staff were friendly and we were close to the center of town with easy access to many restaurants and attractions.

However, the bar/restaurant downstairs that is attached to the hotel plays very loud music until late each night, which even the sound of your air conditioner will not completely drown out if you are on the second floor. Also, it seems the hotel could take some fairly easy and inexpensive steps to greatly improve security. For example, our room had a security bar on the door but our room key didn't work on it. When we asked for the key, the staff told us that "another guest had lost it and they didn't have another one." Likewise, the "security box" in our room had no key or even keyhole, so we couldn't use it. It also appeared that someone could slide open the windows to our room in the hallway without much difficulty and get into the room. However, we had no problems with break-ins while we were there.

The view we had was of a brick wall, but the higher-floor rooms may be better. The windows were frosted so the lack of view didn't really affect the aesthetic quality of the room, which looked tranquil and pretty. There was a TV and air conditioner in the room and a nice window-seat area for reading. The shower was spacious and there was always plenty of hot water. For $55 a night, it was a farily good value, but we probably wouldn't stay there again due to the noise issues and lack of security.

“Loved Cohiba!”

I stayed at the Cohiba for my 35th birthday......and had a great time.

The breakfast was fruit & pastries at the hotel next door, it really wasn't worth my time.......but most "continental" breakfasts aren't! We had a fridge in our room, and the air conditioning worked great! Our balcony rocked!!! on our final night there, they upgraded us to room #20 (or was it 21) the "top" floor suite! It had an amazing patio, with views of Cozumel, a kitchen, a huge palapa roof, a huge bathroom with a bidet, a hammock...........it was amazing!!

The location was perfect! I would definately stay here again!!
