I want to love the Royal Hideaway Playacar...I really do, but overall it just doesn't stack up to other resorts, especially considering the price. We visited the Royal Hideaway May 14-18, 2012.
Let me start with the good stuff.
First of all, this is a small property, which can be a positive for many people, and it is gorgeous and very well maintained. You don't have to walk a mile or get a shuttle to go to pools or restaurants. The two main pools - while somewhat small - are gorgeous with no mold, mildew or missing tiles, and the main infinity pool provides a great view of the ocean, beach and the island of Cozumel off in the distance.
Speaking of the beach, they actually have one now! When we visited the Royal in 2008, the beach was virtually non-existant and the water was not swimmable with all the giant "whale" sand tubes stretching the length of the propery. However, about 10 months ago the Royal extended the beach nearly 200' out from the property and it is a stunning stretch of white sand with a large swimming area. Well done!
If you like a firm mattress, you're in luck! We loved the ultra firm king size bed and slept great!
The main lobby is beautiful and they have a small row of very nice shops, including one shop where you can purchase any of the wonderful places to visit in and around Playa del Carmen. The grounds are nicely manicured and fairly well lit at night.
The food overall I would rate as good to very good, not excellent, but a few things stood out. Believe it or not, the onion rings and fried calamari rings were out of this world, and coconut ice cream - which is highly addictive - was available everywhere. The resort set up a barbecue every day near the main pool, and it, too, was very good, especially the barbecued ribs...awesome! However, Mexican resorts still can't figure out how to make a decent, good old American hamburger!
Maid service and the nightly turn down service were excellent, and for the most part service in the restaurants and around the pool was very good to excellent as well.
I also like the location of the Royal Hideaway which is very close to Playa del Carmen. There are a nice row of shops across from the resort and you can walk to some nice ruins right along Xaman Ha, the main street in front of the resort. Fifth Avenue is about a fifteen minute walk from the resort.
Now for the BAD stuff.
The Royal Hideaway is situated next to the Riu Playacar, a very noisy resort. Our room - 3131 - was right next to the Riu and they played loud, bumping techno music until midnight every night. If you must go to the Royal Hideaway, try to book one of the buildings situated in the middle of the property.
The room was just average, kind of small, and the bathroom didn't stack up to other resorts we've stayed at in throughout Mexico as it was small and cramped, with a small shower. The air conditioning barely cooled the room at all and the poorly stocked mini fridge did not keep anything cold. I did appreciate the free wifi, however. Also, each building has its own concierge, and our guy "Roger" was like the invisible man...never around and not very polite or helpful when you could find him. The in room safe was very small - too small to fit an iPad - and the ironing board and iron were in rough shape.
As I state previously, the food overall was good to very good, some of it even excellent, but the drinks were not very good...weak and watered down and not very tasty. Service at the restaurants was good but very slow...plan two hours on average for dinner, which I think is ridiculous. Also, the portions are quite small. We really enjoyed the meals at Spices, Las Ventanas and the Italian restaurant. There is a breakfast buffet every morning at Spices and I would rate it as just average, with limited juice choices and only one omelet station. And I recommend getting there early as seating is limited. If you prefer a sit down breakfast, you can go to Las Ventanas, but you better plan on spending an hour or more...very slow service at breakfast time. Finally, I am not a fan of having to make dinner reservations, and it shouldn't be required at a small resort like the Royal Hideaway. Room service was very good overall, but the breakfast menu is terrible!
There is no swim up bar, which is a bit of a pain, and service around the pool was great some days and almost non-existent other days.
I stayed at the Valentin Imperial Maya in January of 2011 - another adults only property - and it blows the Royal Hideaway out of the water at HALF THE COST OR LESS! The food is better at the Valentin, the drinks are better, the rooms are nicer, the service is better, the property is prettier...the Valentin Imperial Maya is simply better by any measure, and much more affordable.
Again, I want to love the Royal Hideaway Playacar, it does have a lot going for it, but not enough to get me back, especially given the cost. And if you REALLY want a first class experience with service that is out of this world, try the Grand Velas for about the same price as the Royal Hideaway.
