We had an incredibly nice stay at Casa Ticul. It had everything you could ask for: clean rooms, welcoming and helpful staff, and a really nice complimentary breakfast served on the rooftop deck. More than anything, I liked the design of the hotel. Everywhere were little details that really showed that someone with great taste took the time to make it a pleasant place to be.
Another thing I ended up liking about the hotel was its location. I was a little concerned that it was so far at the end of Avenida 5, but that ended up being a positive feature. In the years since I had last been to Playa del Carman, the town has exploded in size, and down on the main drag it gets a little Cancunish and mall-like... and overpriced. Casa Ticul inhabits a spot that feels a little like the Playa del Carmen I remember: still plenty of restaurants and bars and the other amenities, but somehow, friendlier, hipper and more reasonably priced. And if you need to go to Little Cancun down the road, it's an easy pleasant walk.
One small small complaint: the wifi is nearly useless in the rooms. Dear Casa Ticul: if you're reading this, please get some routers!!
