“Hidden Gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 March 2010

Cute little boutique hotel, which is in a pretty ideal location - end of 5th Avenue. So you're close enough to the action but also far enough from the action. Hotel is very nice especially given the reasonable price. Very close to beach and free daily access to Mamitas. While it lacks a lot of the amenities of larger hotels, we felt like the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Had a couple minor issues - a construction site across the street, but construction didn't start until 9am and was done by 5pm. Sure it kinda ruins the view but not much that can be done about it. You shouldn't be staying in the room when in Playa past 9am anyways because there is too much to do!

Also couple small drainage issues (shower flooded kinda easily, drain under sink also overflowed a bit) but the front desk was very helpful in getting us extra towels to deal with it.

The Four Seasons it is not. But I'm pretty sure we had an equally enjoyable experience and it felt like we were a little more "local" while we stayed there. I'd go back in a New York minute.

“Nice new hotel, but there are issues”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 March 2010

First of all, if you have trouble with steps, don't stay here. It is about a 20 step flight to get to the second level, which is where the hotel starts. We opted for the Standard Room. You do not want this room. It is inside with no windows or balcony. Being next to reception, it is also quite noisy when someone is in that area. From about 11 pm it was quiet. Also, the curtains over the clear brick wall were not quite wide enough to block out the reception light which was on until about 11 pm. This room has a jacuzzi, with a shower head but no curtain to contain the water. Worse for people with leg lift issues, it was about at least a 20" step over to get into it (I understand this is true of all rooms except the suites). After we got a whole lot of water on the floor while trying to shower, we complained strenuously that something had to be done. Buy a shower rod and curtain, but something. Instead, they moved us into a suite at no additional charge. Now, this was a pretty nice room. Had a shower, but no tub. The only problem was minor. It seems like they were trying to make this a very nice group of rooms, but not everybody was on the same page. The shower stall had glass walls, but they did not quite mate to the floor, and was not caulked, so we had some water out of the shower onto the floor. And the beds had what appeared to be goose down comforters. Can you imagine they need this for warmth in Playa Del Carmen? But is was a nice touch. Additionally, there was no mini-fridge, and no hair dryers (dryer available at the front desk). The room had a very nice balcony, and we enjoyed a good bit to time on it. Unfortunately, we did have to spend some time there since the weather during our stay is by far the worse we have had in 15 years. Cold, windy, rainy.
Access to the beach was nice when the sun shined, and it did include a complementary continental breakfast at the resturant below.
The staff was very nice and accommodating, but for the money we would not stay here again. There are too many places with all the amenities for less money, in some cases substanially less than the suite prices.

“Nice hotel but no elevator”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 November 2009

This is definitely a 4 star hotel in terms of the accomodations but if you are looking for anything other than maid service and someone in the front desk/office 24 hours this is not the place. The rooms are clean, modern and feature great amenities like jacuzzi tubs, seperate toilets and laptop with internet access in every room. It is a newer hotel with marble and modern furniture.

I did not know I was going to have to walk up a flight, a long flight at that, of stairs to get to the hotel. I'm young but have some knee challenges so going up and down stairs after dancing all night with sore knees was a drag. I stayed in the Jr suite which was more like a regular room with an extra bed as both beds were in the same room. Overall it was an excellent value for the money as I received close to a 50% discount off the advertised room rate of $160+ per night but my rate did not include breakfast or access to Mamitas which the regular rate includes.

I liked the location away from the noise but walking distance, well at least to a New Yorker, to everything. I walked everywhere including to the hotel from the ADO bus station with bags but I like walking.

“Beautiful Hotel, Excellent Extras!”

We stayed in a Jr. Suite for one night and was totally blown away with all the amenities! The room had one of the most comfortable King size beds I've ever slept in plus an additional smaller bed too! A flat screen TV, an iPod docking station with speaker, (but it didn't work with my iPhone for some reason) and not only free wifi but they also provided a laptop computer in our room too! My favorite thing about the room though was the bathroom which was enclosed by smoked glass, a separately enclosed WC with a dual-flush toilet, had beautiful counters and sinks and an AMAZING juccuzi tub! The only negative was that there wasn't enough hot water or pressure to fill the jaccuzzi quickly, (it took us over an hour and the water was just luke warm.)
The next morning we were given a coupon for complimentary juice and croissants, as well as passes to Mamita's Beach Club that were good for chairs and towels! If you aren't familiar with Mamita's - it is the place to be during the day! Mercedes and Carlos took excellent care of us! We would highly recommend this to everyone and will definitely be returning again!
