“Value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 July 2010

We are 3 family members who stayed in a double room at the Yucatan Vista Inn.

We had an enjoyable stay. The room was clean, quiet, comfortable and private. The air-conditioning saved our lives (it was very hot and humid in Merida in July). The pool was refreshing. It is not an up-market arrogant place, but it is also not a communal backpacker dormitory. This place is good.

Alan was very helpful in guiding us to shopping, restaurants and local attractions. We even went to the zoo with him. We will not hesitate to return.

“To recomend”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 June 2010

Is a very nice place to stay, very clean, the bed is very good and you get all the comforts for a good price. The location is quite good. But manly if you are tired of crowded hostel, this a very good one to chill in the swimming pool and rest.

“Feeling ripped off”

We booked our stay on line and found Alan the owner not the greatest at getting back to us regarding confimation and rates. Once we got to the Inn there were problems. You had to turn on the hot water tap in the sink to get hot water for the shower. If you like sleeping on beds as hard as a board you would love these, not to mention the paper thin pillows and towels that are so thin they repel water as opposed to drying you off.. In the first room we were in the shower handle was broken. The breakfast was hit and miss at best depending on who was working to prepare it. At one point we wanted to pick up a few things at the local grocery store about 10 blocks away. The owner Alan offered to drive us there. We said great and hopped in his car. He did drive us there and stopped in the middle of the road in front of the store we got out and he drove back to the B&B leaving us to lug our bags back the ten blocks to the Inn. Nice pool and if the ladder to get in and out of the pool did not have three of the four steps brocken and rusty we might have enjoyed it more. These are only some of the adventures that await at the Yucatan Vista Inn. The worst as far as I am concerned however is his room rate and what is offered. We booked online and were charged $43.00 us per night. We since found his adds in Yucatan today for 420 pesos (about $35 US) per night and he offers free airport pickup in the add as well as DVD players in the rooms and free cd. There was no airport pickup, there were no dvd players in the rooms and no mention of a free cd. If you see the pictures of the Inn on the net be ready for a somewhat lesser looking establishment.

Alan Thatcher, Owner at Yucatan Vista Inn, responded to this review

This is one of only two poor reviews I have had in three years. Firstly, this person did not complain once while he was here about any of the complaints he mentioned. He and his wife appeared quite happy with the place, frolicking in the pool, and I personally saw him eating breakfast and being served by Martha on the terrace by the pool. He changed rooms after one day where there was certainly no problems with the shower. Its true that sometimes the shower head does not have enough pressure to switch on the ón-demand ' boiler. When that does occur I fix it real quick. He did not complain about that when he was here though, as he also did not complain about the beds, pillows, or towels. I've got plenty of other towels and pillows. The beds are what other people call 'firm'and in fact most guests prefer the firmer beds. I also have a soft top that guests can use. The story about the ten blocks ... they wanted to know where the nearest mini-mart was. I offered to show them, so I drove them 5 blocks not 10 (from street no. 68 and 53 to near street no. 59 and 72 where the OXO and another small mini-mart called the AKI is). This is not part of an obligatory service; and normally it is not offered and should not be expected by a guest. They hopped out of the car and walked across the road to the mini-mart. I had no idea and they did not mention that they were going to load up with lots of bags. I got the impression they wanted to buy some soda pop and sandwiches.

As far as breakfast is concerned, the room rates are less now because we do not serve the previous full three course breakfast, but provide a serve yourself continental which includes gourmet coffee, toast, cereals, and bananas. I have changed to this, partly because of this review, so now, guests should not expect any service because its self-service like most of the other Hotels and B & Bs. The price has bneen reduced accordingly. Full breakfast is still an option. The Yucatan Today price was a special offer to attract local mexican tourists and for guests staying in other Hotels who may want to switch. Most Hotels and airlines have different prices depending on the circumstances, nothing wrong about that. In this guest's case he booked up well in advance with no deposit and I had to reserve that room.

Having said that, the Yucatan Today ad did promise free airport pick-up which is not being offered any more. Many times I drive people to the airport and bus station if I am available; its not a mandatory service though. Also, Martha, who was a part time helper, is no longer working here, because there is no longer a need to have a breakfast service and I had other complaints about her.

The DVD and CDs were supposed to be provided but this was not done unfortunately. This has been remedied with more supervision on the weekends. I must reiterate that I cannot remedy a complaint if a guest does not tell me. The pool steps were broken, and I now make inspections every day.

“Terrific small hotel in great location.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 March 2010

My stay at this small hotel was for more than four weeks in late January/February 2010. I was given an excellent rate because I was there for an extended time and for me it represented really excellent value for money.
Initially I was in a room at the front facing the street which was quite noisy, however after a couple of weeks, I was able to move into a better room facing the rear of the property which was very quiet and just felt much more private. Security, important for me, was excellent.
The breakfast provided each day was very adequate and always started off with fresh squeezed orange juice, something I don't have at home. Sylvia was an efficient, capable staff person and Alan the owner was always helpful with information on the area.
Location was less than a block from the Merida English Library and I was able to get the bus to Progreso, other buses and transportation, very readily,
I found the back courtyard, pool area, with lovely trees, to be very pretty and restful. I suggested to Alan and he thought it a good idea, that a few decorative touches, eg. Mexican wall hangings on the back exterior and perhaps some pictures/wall hangings in the rooms, would add greatly to the ambience and present a homey touch. Because of this and my first room I have not given a top rating in the categoy "rooms"
