I had reservations for three nights at the Hotel Oviedo in Merida, prepaid through Expedia. We arrived at the hotel and it looked nice enough from the street in the dark...then we tried to check in and everything went downhill from there.
The clerk scrambled through four different books with handwritten scribbles of reservations, and couldn't find me; so we went to a nearby internet cafe and re-printed our reservation. Eventually she found us in the scribbles, and tried to show us to our room. First, she couldn't find it in the hotel. Once she did, the room turned out to be occupied by another guest. Back downstairs for another key. Back upstairs to another room, and it didn't have AC as we'd requested. Eventually she found us an unoccupied room with an air conditioner--which was ten feet off the ground and unreacheable. We borrowed a ladder from a room under construction down the hall, flipped the breaker, and finally got the AC unit to work. I understand many people in this area sleep in hammocks so mattresses might not be important, but these were terrible. The pillows were flat and in pillowcases with the last guest's hair stuck in them, the sheets were dirty, the room was lit by a glaring flourescent light...everything was ugly, uncomfortable, and basically a dump.
The rooms were prepaid on Expedia but since the lady at the desk had no record of this, we had to re-pay in cash. Needless to say, we only paid for one night and got out of there.
The only reason we stayed in this place was because we could find NOWHERE else in Merida to stay.....and next time I'd rather sleep on a park bench in the square.
