This small Mexican hotel is rated 2 star, but it deserves 4 or 5 stars. Just 11 rooms around an open courtyard which can be covered in case of rain consist of 2 king suites with an upstairs loft with double bed and sitting area and a downstairs with king bed and sitting area and a huge bathroom. The other 9 rooms are considered junior suites of which some have an enormous upstairs bathroom. There's a small pool--big enough in which to cool off after a day of sightseeing. Dining can be in the open courtyard or in a lovely airconditioned dining room. The chef and part owner, Johann (from Austria) prepares all dishes from scratch. He brings vast experience and his food preparation is a true art. The staff, Mirza, Rodrigo, Jose, Rudy, and Pablo are anxious to please and make one feel "part of the family." (I hope I haven't forgotten someone, because everyone at Villa Maria is so wonderful; we were there a week, and feel we must return.) If one drives, there is an off-the-street guarded lot at no charge. This 17th century mansion has been beautifully restored; even the fountain in the courtyard which had been removed has been replaced, (this is a fascinating story also.) Villa Maria is in the historical part of the city and is only a short walk to shopping, theater, art, museums, etc. For a truly memorable vacation, visit this small, intimate hotel.
