Casa Ana is a small (5 rooms) B&B near the center of Merida. It is like an oasis in the midst of a busy, interesting city. The cost is very reasonable, about $40-$50 a night. The rooms though simple are attractive and immaculately kept. The garden is lush and probably 10 degrees cooler than out on the street. I should point out that we stayed for two weeks, using Merida as a home base. This is unusual, as all the other residents during our stay were there briefly and off touring other places. They were much younger and just had a different style, but I would encourage people to consider this as a home base. The breakfasts were simple--fruit, fresh squeezed orange juice, coffee, and breads (at least half were home made), occasional cereal and at least once an egg dish--but all plentiful, fresh, and delicious. Our hosts, Ana and Mariana, were extremely helpful in scheduling tours, finding out which bus to take, what musical performances were available around town, and directing us to local tours and good restaurants. Water and sodas are available in a refrigerator on the patio on the honor system--you keep a tally on a bulletin board and pay up when you leave. Since we were there so long, Ana helped us get a 5-gallon jug for our room.
Casa Ana is constantly being improved and maintained, with some minor projects taking place while we were there. I had read in earlier reviews about the lack of privacy with the saloon doors on the bathrooms. These have been replaced by full-length louvre doors. Also, someone stated that the doors to the rooms were little more than screen doors. There are screen doors and glass doors, which lock, and draperies that pull across for privacy. Wifi is available in certain spots on the patios.
The walk to the plaza is about 15 minutes, and so you might want to consider this if walking is a problem. However, the trade-off for the walk was coming "home" to a beautiful quiet spot.
