We love Merida and visit often, normally we stay at "Luz en Yucatán" and always had a good experience, love the city and it's cultural life. On this occasion we were traveling with family members and the other hotel had no more rooms available so we had to change plans at the last moment and gave "Hotel Marionetas" a shot, what a terrible mistake!!
The hotel itself is clean and cozy, the staff was friendly and helpful and the breakfast was really good, with the exception of the coffee which was awful, it tasted like it was 10 days old.
The reason what i give it such a bad review is because of the "special treatment" we got from the owner/manager (?) on our last day of stay.
We checked- out and were ready to leave but our car broke, so we had to go back to the hotel and ask the clerk if he could help us to find a mechanic willing to come on a holiday and help us to fix our car, he was really polite and helpful and got us a mechanic right away.
What happened next ruined the whole experience for all of us, we would advise families to stay away from this place and for the owner to make up his mind about the whole hospitality business and let his employees deal with the guests.
We were traveling with our toddler (1 year, 9 months) and he was under the constant supervision of his nanny while i was asking the clerk to look for the mechanic, suddenly my boy took a little trinket from one of the shelves and the manager/owner started asking us who was going to pay for the item if it broke (he didn't break anything, he was looking at it) and suddenly completely flipped out asking us to take the kid out to the road or somewhere else and to his employee to ask us to leave because we were annoying him (!!!) I was in complete disbelief and didn't know what to do, he looked clearly old and frail, I wasn't sure if he was sick, or crazy... never had any person in the hospitality business flip out and be so rude for an object that was so little and couldn't be worth more than 1 USD, more after we had just paid over 400 USD for our stay, plus food and drinks!!!
I was desperate to leave this place, but sadly our car was broken and had to wait for the mechanic to come and figure out what was wrong. The problem with the engine was that the hotel's parking lot is so full of ants that they had decided to extend their nest into our car's electrical system, a little bit of ant spray did the job and left Merida with a horrible memory of this place and that old man yelling at us :-(
Room Tip: Stay away from room 8, it's dark and not very private. The minibar gives electric shocks!!
