“Nice hotel but a bit far from the center”

We stayed here for a couple of nights right before Christmas 2011. All in all it is a very pleasant hotel with nice clean spacious rooms, an atmospheric lobby, and some excellent facilities such as a small gym, pool, and bar. The rooms are classic, with comfortable beds, clean bathrooms etc. 'Nothing wrong with' but also not particular 'anything special'. The building itself is gorgeous though, with a colonial/old world vibe. Only two negative points come to mind. First of all the staff needs to work on their English language skills. And two: the hotel is a bit far from the city centre. Definitely not walking distance, you will need a taxi, whcih takes about 7-10 minutes. Taxis are fairly cheap and reliable though. We haven't tried other hotels in Merida but if you can find something a bit more in the city center this might be worth considering. Otherwise you are likely to have a very comfortable stay here.

“Terrible”

We booked this hotel based on very good previous experiences with this chain hotel in Mexico City and Ixtapa. The room we booked had access to the private lounge and included breakfast. We figured nothing could go wrong, but so many things went wrong it's hard to choose where to begin. The first room we got was located just above the garbage for the hotel (which we found out at 3 in the morning because the garbage truck was so loud!). Next sleepless morning my husband went to get breakfast that wasn't properly set up because when he opened up a lid with no proper handle, he burned himself on the process, three burners flew out and were rolling on the ground while the staff incompetently tried to blow it out. Ironically the breakfast was cold and cheese frozen that is was inedible. When he complained at the front desk, the manager said we could have the breakfast buffet at the regular restaurant if we paid the price difference! Staff was very impolite and wasn't properly trained, needless to say they did not speak english and hung up on my husband because they didn't know how to respond.
They hosted a New Year's eve party that had extremely loud music playing in their courtyard until 3am. I don't think anyone at the hotel could possibly sleep before that time.
The pool was extremely cold because of the way the hotel is designed it never gets any sun and had just a couple of chairs available around it, which makes it impossible to use for lounging.
Every time we showered we had a huge puddle in the bathroom because the curtains didn't work with the tub.
We regret so much choosing this hotel. For the price we paid for the room, this has been the worst experience we ever have had at a hotel.

“Nice hotel for families”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

The rooms are clean and big. The reception staff was very friendly and accommodating. We arrived without reservation and even gave us an upgrade. Good location. We only stayed for one night so cannot comment on food or the pool.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the interior garden seem to be quieter.

“nice hotel with a colonial touch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 December 2011

I have stayed 1 night at this hotel in Nov 2011 with a group of people. Last time (5 years ago) I have stayed at the Hyatt Merida. And I also visited (but not stayed) at Fiesta Americana. These 3 hotels are the largest hotels in town and seem to be the most promising ones.
Among these 3, I definitely can say that Presidente is the best one because it has a very attractive colonial style. It is important if you are staying in a city like Merida. Other 2 hotels are like big city hotels. They are nice but lacking the character of the region.
Presidente has nice large rooms. Breakfast is ok.
Its location is close to main square but you have to walk some 25-20 min or take a taxi.
As a result I would recommend this hotel to the ones who are looking for large and comfortable hotels. More adventurous one could go for nice boutique hotels or haciendas located all over the city and surrounding...
