“Nice courtyard, bad room”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

In January we spent only 1 night in the hotel, which is a good thing.

For a short visit or stopover in the city for a night – location is very good. It is just few minutes walk directly from lovely main city square.

Hotel has beautiful, picturesque and well maintained courtyard, as other reviewers already described, nothing to add on that. This definitely gives a great impression upon entrance from the street.

However, our room, at the ground floor right near the pool was quite awful, nothing of the rooms I see on pictures from other reviewers. It was room No 6 if I remember well, so avoid it in any way you can.

First, in the room was terrible smell of mould, I suppose it’s because of pool proximity. I wouldn’t complain if that would have been the only drawback. Same smell, just more intensive, and black traces of mould was in the bathroom. Shower was worst, mould and scale all around.

Room decoration would be nice (interesting wooden furniture in old domestic style) if it would have been maintained, but feeling of falling apart and dirt was all around. Bed covers were white and with several obvious dirt spots!!! Towels in the bathroom were also very poor and smelly. TV is hidden in wooden cabinet, I put on the side that it’s ancient TV set with dirty remote controller, but signal is very bad and it’s hard to watch anything. It was not important to us, as we just wanted to watch basic news and found that on the internet. Wireless internet was working and that was OK.

We couldn’t find more than one socket in the room (for that one we unplugged bed side lamp) to re-charge mobile phones and laptop.

Breakfast in the morning was OK (they serve it upon your order of available standard stuff, not buffet style), with huge minus that they do not have espresso coffee (not even as option to be paid).

Despite really lovely impression upon entrance – I wouldn’t choose this hotel again and thus wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. But again, it was just our room, I get impression that other rooms are much better than what we've got. So if you have to go there, avoid ground floor rooms on the pool side.

Room Tip: Avoid room No. 6, possibly all other rooms on the groundfloor near the pool.

“What a nice surprise!”

You might not notice this hotel from the busy street it is on just two blocks from the Plaza but walk through the doorway into the courtyard and you are in another world. From the lobby courtyard walk through the gate into the inner courtyard where the rooms are located on three levels. It is serene and peaceful, just like you imagine a monastery would be. The rooms and bathrooms are small but very comfortable and extremely clean. The trees in the courtyards attracted beautiful birds. A small pool in the inner courtyard would be a nice place to cool off if the weather was hot. The room has a TV although it seemed almost sacrilegious to watch it. The courtyards are decorated with religious items which I found to be beautiful, however, I do like that type of thing. We had a good breakfast in the hotel's restaurant and also ate at several other good restaurants within a few blocks of the hotel. I didn't have the time I needed to really explore Merida so plan to come back and will again stay in this quiet, peaceful gem.

“Quiet and Comfortable”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 December 2011

This was my second stay. The first time I also had reservations at Hotel Caribe, but was sent to La Mision De Fray Diego. But this trip I had reserved the room directly here. The courtyards are pleasant and cooling. We enjoyed bird watching while eating breakfast. The restaurant is always comfortable and has some of the best local Yucatecan specialities. Arturo was our waiter most of the time, but Jose was very attentative as well. This is not a 4 star american resort. If you want that stay in Cancun where you won't even know you are not in the US! But I want to have an experience that is local, not something I can experience in Indianapolis. This is a nice local hotel that has a mix of clientele, with Mexican families, Mexican businessmen, European and North American visitors coming and going. We stayed 9 nights and had a very nice stay. There are only about 26 rooms and three levels. I will stay there again.

“Sweet garden to hang out and close to main square.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 December 2011

Sweet garden area, quiet, and walking distance to main square. Rooms were a bit dark... But comfortable. I will go again.

“A perfect oasis of calm and comfort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 September 2011

We originally had reservation at Hotel Caraibe, but hey were full. We were sent to La Mision de Fray Diego. It is a real gem, offering very comfortable room and a charming ambiance. The staff is most helpful in contacting taxis for excursions or the bus station for tickets. Great restaurant and fabulous location. We would definitely stay there if and when we go back to Merida. We recommended the Mision to friends going to Merida in the Spring.
