“Friendly staff but..........”

I was staying athe the Akumal Beach Resort and evacuated due to the possibility of a hurricane, and this is where we ended up staying for two nights. My room was on the top floor right on the corner a single. It had no working light in the bathroom, I had to take the lid off the toliet tank and dig inside to flush the toliet. The bedside lamp had no light bulb, no remote for the tv (which is the least of my complaints) In the morning when I went to shower, no water came out of the shower head, just the tap below, that was quite the performance trying to wash long thick hair, I was litterally head down, butt up for this performance! My AC ran constantly unless I flicked the breaker to shut it off. That said, the room was clean, so were the sheets, and overall I had no complaints about the cleanliness, that was a plus. Now the noise.........besides the street noise, the hotel is like an ampitheatre, any noise anywhere echoes through the whole place. There were alot of tired people the next am, trying to make the best of the situation. Granted most of us were seasoned travellers and this not being the worst place we had ever stayed. But in retrospect, had I had more information, I would have made alternate arrangements to stay elsewhere.

“STAY HERE IF YOU ARE TRAVELING BY BUS, OTHERWISE CHOOSE SOMEWHERE ELSE”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2011

This hotel is right down the street from two bus terminals. It was awfully nice to get off my bus and just walk across the street. The next morning at 5:00 am I was able to walk out the door and flag a passing cab to the airport in 30 seconds.

That said, this hotel is overpriced for what you get. I paid P 470. I had a large room upstairs facing the street. It seemed very nice at first but later I realized that the window didn't open and the control knobs had been removed from the AC unit. There was no ceiling fan. It was hot and stuffy all night.

The neighborhood is OK during the day but I wouldn't walk around after dark. It's a long walk to the historical district.

The hotel can be very noisy. It has an open courtyard/stairwell up the center of the building which looks very nice but means that noise really carries. A group of about 30 school children arrived shortly after me. Fortunately I like kids and have a sense of humor because they ran up and down the stairs shouting and slamming doors for hours until they all finally fell asleep exhausted. More intrusive was the TV in the ground floor lobby that was on all night long and that I could hear in my room.

The little restaurant is nice although a bit pricey.

“Sleepless in Merida”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 March 2008

Had to stay in the El Espanol hotel in Merida.
It was across the street from the Bus Station, right on the corner of a busy street ( traffic light outside) with traffic most of the time.
Noise, noise, noise.
The hotel was 'tourist class' with friendly staff who didn't speak English. I was lucky my room had a window to the outside with a/c and a fan...others were less unfortunate..no window to the outside!
Meals were available from 0700 -2300 and were fine.
Hotel was clean and within walking distance of the main plaza (a fifteen minute walk).
If one is a light sleeper DONT stay at this hotel and if you are not into walking, this is not a place to stay.

“Nevt to Bus Station”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 December 2007

My room was small, clean and on the corner of a busy intersection. However, it was high enought that the noise wasn't too bad. The front staff was very, very helpful with all my needs. I would recommend this hotel if you want easy access to the 2 bus stations which are across the street.
