We spent two weeks in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico Nov./Dec. 2011, and our base was the Hotel Dolores Alba in Merida. As two-week guests we were treated wonderfully - we got to meet all the staff, chat with them, share experiences, and begin to feel really at home. Our room was on the 3rd floor in the newer section, and was immaculately clean, though pretty basic, had lots of room (two double beds), a Juliette balcony overlooking the courtyard, pool, and gardens, and easy-to-use air conditioning (which we only used once or twice, when we were gone all day and the room had been locked up. The overhead fan made a background noise that moderated the sounds of the city, close by, and we slept well, despite the disco just a couple of doors away.
Our room rate included breakfast every day; however, that is perhaps the one area where they could improve (considering they do not attempt to be a 4* hotel). Every day was the same offering: scrambled eggs, beans, (fresh, fresh) bread, cut-up fresh fruit, a limited number of fresh bananas, cold cereal and milk. If one were there for only a few days, however, I think the offerings aren't too bad. They also have a limited menu for lunches and suppers; the food is good and well-priced.
Oh - the elevator quit just after we got there, and was not repaired by the time we left, almost 2 weeks later. (At least we didn't have to carry our bags *upstairs*, just down!)
All in all, we found Hotel Dolores Alba, Merida, to be a welcoming little respite from the hustle and bustle of the city just outside its doors - and the historic downtown, plus the main (huge) market(s), really are pretty much just outside its doors. You can, and should, walk just about anywhere. And you can do so safely (we loved Merida!). We would definitely stay here again.
