“Nice hotel, shame about the owner”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 February 2011

On the plus side, wonderful, unique house in quiet setting, full of quirky charm. However, some of those quirks could turn into negatives for some. As other reviews mentioned, need degree in engineering to work out how to open doors (not amusing late at night), take torch for the "period lighting" if needing to read maps, guidebooks etc. Charming local staff from whom the owner could learn a lot! Owner more suited to interior design than customer relations. Eccentric to the point of rude. We were made to feel like unwelcome intruders when arriving early - we only wanted to leave luggage. Not the best welcome especially as my credit card had already been debited for a 3-night stay well in advance of our arrival.

“Interesting building, uninterested owners.”

I think the owners of this establishment have confused eccentricity with indifference.
After having a struggle to even get in the place when we arrived (due to the fact no one was around), we were then told the room we'd booked was unavailable due to it "needing some work" (although this didn't prevent it from being occupied by another couple the day before we left). Why not just tell us the truth owners (double booked?); don't talk to us like we're idiots and then roll your eyes. We're adults and we appreciate honesty. Also some smiling and a "welcome" greeting would be an idea. :)
The alternative room we were offered was nice, but very dark. This wasn't a surprise because I'd noticed all the lamps were lit on photos of it on the website, but the (admittedly tasteful) dark furniture/decoration didn't help either (and that is why we had originally chosen what appeared to be a brighter room). Also the hotel looked like it could do with a bit of a spring clean.
At the end of our stay there I feared no one would be on reception the morning we were due to leave (not early, around 10am) so I suggested to my partner that we pay the day before when someone was actually around. This we did and I was right...no one around on the morning, so no "goodbye, we hope you enjoyed your stay" etc, and no help getting our luggage down the narrow flights of stairs.
So owners if you read this... no we didn't particularly enjoy our stay with you (which is a shame). You would do a lot better by remembering that you're offering a service we're paying for, so try and look like you're happy and/or interested to be providing it . Also first impressions count. Thanks.

“A gorgeous hotel in a beautiful historic home setting with a wealth of interesting antiques, nooks and crannies.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 December 2010

We stayed here and did not regret the hotel which is beautiful and feels much smaller than it really is. Staying here is like going back in time, but with all the mod cons. We stayed in a less expensive ground floor room; excellent value, but dark and a bit closed in. We would definitely pay more for a brighter upstairs room if we went again. But we found many small terraces and little nooks on te roof where we could sit in the sun undisturbed.
The house is like a live in museum and you do feel as though you are staying in the past, but in a real lavish family house.
The breakfasts are fabulous and the dining room is exquisite. The swimming pool is more the size of a large fish pond, in a dark and dank courtyard and very public. Stay elsewhere if you need a pool.

“This is a cool experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 November 2010

I spent 5 days at Casa Mexilio in June 2010 as part of a business trip to Merida. This was my second visit to the city and my second stay at this hotel (i had stayed there previously 5 years ago). I enjoyed my first stay and that convinced me to look past some of the more negative TA reports; I'm pleased that I did.

Surely it is all a matter of taste but, if you neither require nor enjoy the typical standardized hotel experience then this is a great place to stay. What you get in exchange for abandoning the 'conveniences' of the chain hotel are character and a proper sense of place from people who understand the city. This is a beautiful historic house, a comfortable, original and unpretentious place to stay. But it is not new nor luxurious in the popular sense of the word - and that is part of its charm.

Merida in June is a hot place (40 Celsius), and the thick plantings and the cenote-like pool seemed to keep the hotel cooler and more comfortable than it ought otherwise to have felt. On the roof top there are places to relax in the evening and admire the city lights.

Our room was the Manuel de Falla, with lots of cross ventilation; the fans and air-conditioning were more than adequate. The rooms are attractive and comfortable - but do not come here looking to confirm neo-Mayan expectations of Yucatan. The atmosphere and taste are more sophisticated than that.

A complimentary breakfast (varied and filling) was served in the garden of a beautiful period house immediately across the street.

The hotel is a bit removed from the most touristy parts of town, but taxis are a half a block away, and most attractions in the downtown area are within an easy 10-15 minute walk. At night you can stroll 5 minutes to the Parque Santiago and enjoy an untouristed part of the city, with good (but not fancy) food, live music and dancing in the open air.
Excursions to sites outside the city are easily arranged through Reception.

Staff was helpful all the way through.

“Beautiful and Quiet”

I loved the nooks and crannies of this 18th Century Hennequn mansion. The interior garden and the winding staircases that lead to the different rooms create the feeling that you are staying in your own private place. If you want company, you can always head up to the bar on the roof before supper to meet other guests. The gourmet breakfasts were included and they showed real flair, not always easy to accomplish with breakfast, always with a vegetarian option. We loved this place. This is our second trip and we will return again and again. Merida is such a romantic place.
