“A great downtown hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 January 2012

This is our second stay at this wonderful old hotel in downtown Merida. It's hard to go wrong staying here- great location and lots of charm. The rooms have been upgraded since our first stay many years ago, and that was a treat. While most of the staff speak at least some English, it is best if you can speak some Spanish to make sure all goes smoothy. If you can stay on a Saturday night, you will be able to fullly particiipate in the weekly fiesta that happens in downtown Merida Saturday night and all day Sunday. Streets are closed to traffic, restaurants bring their chairs and tables onto the street, bands are playing everywhere, and there is a wonderful party atmosphere. On Sunday, the central plaza is filled with arts and crafts vendors. It is a "must do" experience in Merida, and this hotel is a good base from which to experience the fiesta.

“Wonderful Hotel”

This hotel has character and charm. The rooms are very comfortable and stylish. It is in a great location. The a*/c can be noisy but they can sort it out if you ask. The breakfast buffet is average. The pool area not that inviting. The staff are effcient but don't smile. Overall though it was an excellent stay with nice extras like robes and slippers

“Terrific Colonial hotel in great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 December 2011

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights (November 24 and 25, 2011) as part of a tour group. This Mexican Colonial hotel had a wonderful inner courtyard that the room hallways looked out on. The hotel has elevators. There is also a pool area in the courtyard outside in the back of the hotel. The room was average size. We were given a laptop to use in the bar to check our email (no charge).
We were on the second floor and could hear noise all night from outside the hotel. They were redoing the street and pouring concrete - it sounded like they were right in our room.
Meals in the restaurant were good. We also had a special dinner in the outside courtyard which was lovely.
Location of the hotel is terrific as you can walk to the main square (currently closed and under renovation) in 5-10 minutes. Good central location. You can also take a horse and buggy ride for about 30-45 minutes which we did. Gives you a good overview of the surrounding area. Our driver only spoke Spanish so we really didn't understand the commentary he was giving along the way.
Great hotel in a beautiful colonial city.

“Great boutique hotel in Merida”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2011

We had a great stay at this hotel in August 2011. We stayed in one of the historic old rooms overlooking the pool. The hotel was spotless and the staff was very helpful, including George the manager, in arranging transportation and a tour. The hotel is within walking distance to many historic sites in the city.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the older section of the hotel. It is worth the extra money.

“Casa del Balam”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 December 2011

Lovely boutique hotel with a Spanish colonial flavor. The rooms were very small and the locks on the door were not secure. I thought the employees were very nice and helpful. As usual the buffet breakfast was really good but the dinner not so good. The hotel is centrally located and you can walk into the center of the town, which I did. You can get a free tour from the tourist office int he center of the town which I recommend. There is a chocolate store about 2 blocks from the hotel where they make chocolate with jalapeno pepper. It's delicious.
