“Unpleasant surprise”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2011

We had five nights at this hotel which were serviceable for our needs to explore the Yucatan. The sixth night was downright scary. We were on the third floor for the duration, this floor has the pool at the top of the open courtyard. Starting in the afternoon the third floor began to be inhabited by young men intent on partying with open sexual exploits, clothes discarded at the doorways, slamming doors, etc. The evening progressed to include more men, who more or less took over the entire floor intent on partying. The noise and intrusion continued with implied intimidation if I as a guest ventured out of my room.

I called the desk and they did manage to quiet things down for a while. The noise and partying went on until 3 am.

Oh, did I mention the toucans in a cage in the restaurant? Very sad. One was obviously sick. The management did not seem to care too much about comments. Very poorly managed.

“Great location very near the main square. Attractive old hotel but rooms vary.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2011

Great location very near main square. Old hotel with lovely garden and fountains in courtyard as well as a small rooftop pool. Rooms vary between beautiful views over square and dark rooms at back. But rooms were generally clean and bathrooms although old worked well.

“Terrible”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 November 2010

There's a reason why the website doesn't show the rooms, they are uninhabitable. I had booked for a week and left after the first night (lost my prepaid booking). The room was extremely small and dark, the bed sheet was stained, the air conditioning only had one temperature setting making the room too cold to sleep, the window shades could not be opened because the window opened to an internal hallway, when opening the window the room got full of mosquitoes, the internet was not working the night I arrived, the desk was too small to do any work, the shower leaked water all over the bedroom floor, the closet was too small to fit anything, the safe's lock didn't work. There are much better hotels in Merida than the Caribe.

“the right price”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2010

i actually was looking for this hotel to stay in again, i stayed here several years ago. i didn't like one room they had downstairs so they showed me another up stairs and i ended up staying they for almost a week. no frills, but clean and functional. they also have a dining area downstairs, good yogurt and fruit. i thought it was very cheaply priced, almost a full week for what i could pay staying in San Francisco for one night. while it was a good place to stay, there were a few speed bumps. several times i couldn't find anyone who spoke English so communication was an issue, and I got the impression that they were not all that interested in listening to my concerns. they are not as well stocked as the larger hotels (could never find the one hair dryer they had). no frills hotel for a decent price.

“Charming Hotel....But”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 July 2010

This is a charming hotel with nice architectural and historical value. We found the maid service to by very good. The rest of the hotel staff was week. ****if you have a rental car or any car for that matter, beware parking is expense*****They charge 8 pesos an hour! You can avoid paying by getting up early and having a staff member open up the garage for you before the attendant arrives, usually before 7am. The location is awesome (1 block away from the central plaza where everything happens in Merida). We did sleep well, the hotel good TV that kids could watch, and the swimmng pool was nice, a little too much clorine, but it worked. You get what you pay for with this hotel.
