“Only a good location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2012

We spent 3 nights at the Colonial Hotel. The hotel is nothing of special and I don't think it deserves the four stars it has got but it has a fantastic location being in a central position very closed to the "Plaza Grande" of Merida. In our room we had the air conditioning and a Tv with quite a lot of channels with some in English language ans some in Spanish. The bathroom was ok. The room eas a bit noisy beacuse of the external unit of the air-conditiong just outside our window. People at the reception spoke english very badly and some time it was really hard to speak to them and be understood even if they looked kind and helpful. There is a kind of swimmingpool but it's more a big bathtub or a part of the forniture that a real swimmingpool. Prices are good and quite cheap so I think it can be worth it for a short stay.

“Good location, adequate hotel, nice indoor pool”

Very well located, two, blocks from plaza grande. Front Desk staff spoke no English but tried to be helpful.

Indoor pool with no roof. A nice touch! Hotel had character.

Rooms were basic but adequate. Breakfast buffet at 75 pesos was good value and food was plentiful.

“Great location, shame about the rooms!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2011

At only 5 minutes walk from the main plaza, this location is excellent, however the rooms don't really live up to standard.

The room we stayed in had no natural light - the only window was into the corridor - so it already felt quite dark and dingy. But then we saw the bathroom - ants crawling over the floor, a louvre style window that was so decrepid looking we didn't even touch it, and a fluorescent bar light above plastic ceiling tiles. It was like a prison bathroom. That said, the shower was actually good and was probably the best thing about our stay! They will not give you a remote control for your air con, so if you need the temperature adjusted, you have to go down to the front desk and ask. For some reason many hotels in Mexico think you will steal their remotes!

The 'pool' is actually tiny (maybe max 5 people could get in), none of us used it as it didn't look particularly clean. The 'pool bar' was non-existent, we stood waiting to get a beer for 10 minutes and no one appeared to serve us.

I have to compliment them on their breakfast though, there was a lot of good quality food and it was probably the best breakfast we'd seen after 2 weeks in Mexico.

Room Tip: Ask for one with a window to the outside

“A pleasant place to stay in the middle of where you want to be!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 March 2011

We are here again, our fourth year, and it's better than ever. The wonderful charm of Mexico is still at the Hotel Colonial: the architecture, the traditional decorations and most importantly, the friendly, helpful Yucatecan staff . . . and you are still in the middle of everything, the resturants, the entertainment, the shops, only two blocks from the Grand Plaza (Zocolo) - all that is special about Merida! But the hotel has gotten even better. No more window units covering part of the window. The rooms now have modern, quiet air conditioners located on the wall. The old square TVs have been replaced with nice, large flat screens with HD cable. There is a combination safe in the room. AND there is now free wireless in the room. The Colonial has always been a great value, clean and neat, but it's an even a better value now!
PS If you are going to stay more awhile, talk to the manager (Jorge) about a special rate.

“Excellent location - OK hotel. Choose room carefully!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 March 2011

Stayed here for three nights at the end of a small group tour of Mexico. The hotel is located at the junction of two busy streets and within a couple of blocks of the Zocalo and lots of reasonably priced restaurants - including one literally across the road from the main entrance. Several local bars have a 5-7 happy hour. There is a small supermarket at the next junction.
At first, we were a bit disappointed in our room, because the only window opened on to a corridor. However, that was a blessing in disguise, because, unlike most of the rest of our group, we didn't suffer any street noise. The room was on the third floor, so likewise we didn't hear the noises from reception that other reviewers mentioned. The room was basic but clean and adequate and after all we only slept and showered there!.
The reception staff were friendly and helpful and there is free in-room wi-fi. The hotel's restaurant was excellent for breakfast - 74 pesos for a buffet with a good variety of hot and cold foods As mentioned by others, the pool was small, but there's a very pleasant roof terrace and we'd grab a beer from the supermarket and sit up there to watch the sun set before getting ready to go out for a meal.
We left Merida by coach and the coach station is a 10 minute taxi ride (40 pesos) away.
