“Peaceful Colonial Setting”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 February 2008

I just came back from an 11 day stay in Merida. My first 5 nights were spent at Casa San Juan. Lovely old colonial setting about five blocks from the Plaza Grande. Although the area is mainly commercial, and the street a main thoroughfare, the room was very quiet. Nice garden in the rear for breakfast and reading. My Spanish is minimal, but I was able to get directions, breakfast, and my laundry done. Pablo, the owner, was available by phone, and speaks English very well. I really enjoyed my stay and feel some of the other reviews were unwarrented. Great value, and I recommend Casa San Juan.

“Ok for the Money BUT...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 November 2007

Casa San Juan is ok for the low price you pay, however, the owner does not stay on the property any more, as one reviewer stated. He might have in the past, but not anymore. There is now a rotation of 3 people who often get their communications mixed up leaving no one on the premisis. Only one attendant speaks passable English. Breakfast consists of coffee with sugar and powdered creamer, and half a toasted 12 inch sub roll, a sweet roll and cold margarine & jelly. That is it. No fresh fruit, no homemade marmalades, etc. The property itself is charming with rooms opening off the the inner courtyard and the outer courtyard where you take your morning coffee. Bring your own pillow as the pillows are old and hard rocky lumps. the sheets for the first 3 nights were so worn they were scratchy with pills, the 4th and last night, the sheets were changed and while the thread count was low, they were fine. However, the reek of mold and mildew is very strong and the paint and plaster is falling off the walls in chunks. If you get one of the rooms with a door that leads to the outside courtyard, the holes in the screen are large and allows the mosquitoes and no-see-ums into the room. I know mold and mildew is a problem in the Yucatan due to the humidity, especially in the old colonials, but it does require frequent maintenance, which is lacking @ Casa San Juan. There was a streak of black mold on the wall at the head of my bed as well as an obvious termite tunnel coming down from the picture on the wall over the bed. In addition, the property is further away from the center of town than it appears from the hotels web site. It is a several block walk. past a busy bus depot, along poorly lit streets at night, to get to the Zocala. All in all Casa San Juan is charming, if you only stay for a short stay and want to save money, however, i am sure there are better maintained hotels, closer to the central area for longer visits.

  • Liked — the charm of staying on an old colonial
  • Disliked — the reek of mold

“What a scam !!!”

We made reservations to stay at the Casa San Juan from February 7 through February 12, 2008 and specifically inquired about their cancellation policy. We were sent via email a copy of their policy which states a full refund will be made if the cancellation is made thirty days prior to the reservation arrival date. They requested full payment via PayPal before confirming our reservation. I paid the full amount and have a receipt which shows it was received by the Casa San Juan.

Due to unforseen medical circumstances, we had to cancel our reservation during the first part of July 2007. Since that time we have sent numerous emails, and have made several telephone calls, to the Casa San Juan. They will not speak to us on the telephone nor answer our emails. PayPal won't do a thing since it's over their 45 day warranty and we're waiting for Travelocity to review the problem. Beware of making any payment to the Casa San Juan!!!

“cancelled reservation”

I made reservations a month ago to stay over a busy holiday season, and I corresponded with them a few times to confirm. A couple weeks ago, I received an email cancelling my reservations because they mistakenly "overbooked".

This is very unprofessional. Reservations at this place must not mean much.

We stayed at Casa San Juan for 2 nights (payed for 6)beginning of February. Decor and furnishings were nice but the location isn't the greatest in our opinion. We found it noisy at night and there didn't seem to be anyone there overnight minding the place. The breakfast consisted of coffee, a bun and nothing else. The rooms were clean and confortable but the bathroom left a lot to be desired. We left after 2 nights and went to Progresso (small town)
