“Zina's Guest House is Isla-tastic for a young family like ours!”

Our first trip to Isla and we found the perfect place to stay in Zina's Guest House. Private, very clean and nicely appointed, our apartment had several great amenities. Kitchenette was plenty for what we wanted and needed (even cooked beans and rice twice with no problem). The shower is big enough for parents to get in and help rinse off sandy kids. Beds are comfy and space was more than adequate for two weeks worth of "stuff". Our second floor apartment open out onto an amazing common area deck with a small pool for our son, table and chairs for outside dining, a outside bed to take siestas, and even a little table and chair set for our son. The only ONLY part that was a little tough on us city folk from DC were the roosters nearby, but Zina even provided earplugs for us until we got used to the sounds of the community! I understand that concern may have resolved itself... rooster stew, perhaps?
The location: La Gloria is a great place for families with kids to stay - safe and completely "non-resorty" atmosphere. Lots of cheap, low-cost eateries that have all the stuff kids like (tacos, chips, etc.). There are grocery stores (big and little) with anything you'll need for kids on vacation. It's just a hop, skip, and an jump to an amazing, well-supervised playground (Parque Integral Las Tortugas) for our 3 1/2 year old, just a few blocks from a great open-air market (read: fresh avocados, mangos, freshly sqeezed OJ and much more every day), and a short walk to little seaside beaches and local shopping.
Zina's was great for us - if we wanted to head to the Playa Norta, it's a short (and very cheap!) taxi ride to downtown. Merchants, food, drink, fun, beach... all very accessible to Zina's. Don't miss Chuuk Kay (nevermind... Zina won't let you!).
Zina gave us an amazing Mexican experience with a personal touch. We were first-timers for this length of international travel with our young son, and Zina was a gracious host and a wealth of information about the island, the culture, the people, and the language. We have really found the place we want to make our family vacation destination.

“Loved It!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2011

Stayed at Zina's for 4 nites and had a wonderful time. We had the upstairs apartment and it was perfect. Zina had stocked our frig with breakfast items as well as bread and cereal (and even some beer). Apartment was very clean and bathroom even offered some toiletries. She took us for a ride in her golf cart and showed us "mid lsland" life, pointing out some great restaurants along the way. Her dog, Punta, is friendly and loves to hang with you. We enjoyed the roof top patio with chairs and also had a pool (weather made it a little too cool to use). It offered a great view of LaGloria. The grogery store is just 2 blocks away. Felt very safe in the neighborhood. No golf cart is needed. It's a $2.00 cab ride to downtown or just a short walk to the caribbean side of the island.

“Full immersion in island culture”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2011

Zina's apartments are a good value for the budget savvy and for those who want to delve deep into island life. Zina is a good source for info. This is a good place to stay for a longer term affordable alternative.

“Insider's View of the Island Culture”

I recently stayed with Zina over the New Year's holiday, and I can happily report that it was a terrific experience and a great way to "live" the experience of Christmas and New Year's. Zina has a lot of knowledge and showed me how to appreciate the unique sounds of the street - the knife sharpener who plays the flute to alert the neighborhood of his arrival, the honking of the bread-maker's bicycle horn, the shouts to neighbors upon passing by.

Zina was also appreciative of the fact that I wanted to eat healthy and had her kitchen stocked with ingredients for a good breakfast and also big salads for dinner. She also accompanied me and some friends to a local favorite restaurant where we got a very warm local welcome.

Zina's Guest House is an amazing value for the savvy traveler. It's location in La Gloria is an easy cab ride to the heart of Isla's action, and all I had to do was cross the street to find a corner where the locals hail cabs.

The rooftop patio was my favorite place to sit in the mornings with coffee and some knitting.

“A thrill to the senses, a warm hug, authentic as it gets...Zina is a treasure and her Guest House is awesome fun.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2011

I didn't know what to expect since I was travelling alone to Mexico for the first time. Good friends had recommended Zina's Guest House and I was not disappointed!
She is warm, street savvy, clever, resourceful, and just plain cool...what a perfect host. The room was comfortable and clean, the deck view perfect for sipping a brew and people watching. It took me a few days to get used to all the commotion at night but I realized that Isla is a living, breathing real neighborhood....noise, sights, smells and all....Embrace it while you can, no matter what the hour. I would come back in a flash, and recommend it highly to both single travellers and couples.
