“Perfect get away just far enough out of town”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

We returned to IM for our annual new years vacation. We have always stayed closer to downtown so I was a bit concerned about staying "out this far" out. Turns out we absolutely loved it! It was about a 15 minute walk into town or about 8 minutes into the neighborhood area of the island. Taxis and buses go by all the time so if you don't feel like walking you can grab a taxi for around 30 pesos or take the bus for 5 pesos. We were about 15 minutes walking to the new large market, Chedraui.

We stayed in Punta Piedra II in the upper unit. We had a full sized fridge, two burner eletric stove, 20 L water jug, microwave, coffee maker with filters & coffee, toaster oven, blender, sink and of course plenty of plates, bowls, cups, etc. It was perfectly furnished with a comfy king sized bed and dining table with four chairs, and another chair by the sliding patio door. Room also had a TV that was mounted high on the wall and an armoire for storing clothes. There is also a programable safe and an air conditioner (we did not use AC just kept windows open and the room was very comfortable). We had a large balcony with two loungers, a full sized patio table with three chairs and another chair. Room had plenty of towels and beach towels.

As for the beach area it was great to be the only people there. For 17 days we didn't have anyone else around unless we went to Norte Beach downtown. The water is rough here so snorkeling and swimming at this area can be a challenge and is not for the beginner. The ground is rocky so you should have some type of water shoe to wear. It did not bother us at all, with the breeze we were rarely hot. We loved being just a few steps to our room to grab cold drinks and use a clean bathroom. We did not swim in the pool but it was always clean.

If you are wanting a place to stay where you will meet lots of people this may not be the place for you. The time we were there, there were not many other guests---I believe the guests were friends of the owner who were there while we stayed. Housekeeping is also only once per week, but I am sure if you asked and were willing to pay you could arrange twice weekly or more housekeeping services.

We made our lodging arrangements thru Mornings in Mexico and were pleased with our accomodations. There is parking available for golf carts. I would recommend Punta Piedra II. There are lots of great places to eat in the neighborhoods. We explored a lot and found some really fun eateries.

“I always stay at Punta Piedra”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 August 2011

Every time I plan a trip to Isla Mujeres, I look at all the accommodation options, and end up at Punta Piedra again (and will be staying there for my 5th time this winter). For a woman traveling solo, it is perfect. The owner, Amy, is a very friendly woman originally from the U.S. She and her family live just a couple doors down, and it's nice having someone close by who, if I got sick or something happened, I wouldn't have to rely on communicating with in my horrible tourist’s Spanish. Beyond that, the location is perfect - just far enough out of town to be quiet and relaxing, but close enough that you don't feel stranded. It’s about a 20 minute walk to town, or you can get one of the taxis that drive by every few minutes. It is right on the beach on the Caribbean side so you get the sound of crashing waves and the stiff breezes that are partial to that side of the island. There is a private pool for the 4 apartments. Each apartment has its own hammock next to the pool, overlooking the ocean. The apartments themselves are comfy and well equipped - not 4 star luxury, but perfect for a "beach bum" vacation. And the price can’t be beat! There are a couple other places on the island in this price range, but not a single one has all of the amenities that Punta Piedra does. Speaking of price, it will probably be close to your last day before Amy comes around to collect the remainder of what you owe (after your deposit). Don’t fret! It’s just the laid back way things are done on the island. The only negatives I can think of are: 1. The bed isn't W Hotel comfy, but it beats the rock-hard matresses you find in most of the Yucatan, and 2) the pool can be pretty chilly throughout most of the year.

“We LOVED it! We will be back!”

My husband and our 12 yr old daughter went last October and it was perfect.
We don't get a lot of "just the 3 of us together time", since my mom who has Alzheimer's lives with us. So my sister stayed with Mom and we had 7 days of just us.
We stayed in the lower Apt. 2 with 2 beds. We loved having the full kitchen and made use of it every morning for coffee and breakfast while daughter was out in the crashing waves collecting her sea glass and shells. Taxis were cheap and we buzzed here and there. We had a driveway to park our golf cart we rented for a few days. AND we loved our own little pool right outside our door complete with lounge chairs and hammocks. There was a few ladies staying in the apartments next to us but we saw them once. Amy - the owner is great and checked on us. And we loved the local doggies that hung out with us.
We started talking about where to go this fall and it was decided unanimously that we are going back to Isla AND Puntra Piedra in October!! Can't wait!!

Room Tip: we booked through Mornings in Mexico

“A Quiet place to relax and rewind”

My husband and I finished our yearly 3 weeks in Mexico with 3 days at Punta Piedra. It was wonderful, very peaceful. In the mornings you could watch the sunrise and know that there is peace in the world, if only on that small island. I have a fairly stressful job and only get one vacation per year so it is nice to go to a place that is away from hussle and bussle of the world.
I read 4 books I brought with me and went to sleep each night to the sound of the waves on the beach. Everything we needed was there and Amy was great with anything else we needed. Have all ready booked our next stay there, this time for 7 days.
I like the upstairs room better because you can nap on the balcony and have the windows open and not worry if someone will walk up or look in. Yes it is a little remote but taxis are reasonable 20 pes. to the square but if you want peace and quiet and a simple room with a comfortable king sized bed this is the place for you.

“absolutely perfect!”

We stayed 8 nights at Punta Piedra II in the bottom studio. We were unsure if our balcony would be private enough because it's right next to dipping pool but we liked the idea of being close to beach and pool, so we booked it. It was as if we were the only ones staying there! We rarely saw the other guests (which would have been fine). The studio has everything you need to make simple meals. They supply all the drinking water you'll need. Very clean and no bugs...the only time I was bit was on an evening trip to town for dinner. The location is far enough away from El Centro that you can choose either a busy or quiet atmosphere easily. We also walked to the south into the small neighborhoods and found the island tortilla makers and the homemade bar-b-que man. We really enjoyed that.
Amy (the owner) was great as is Bowser, the dog, and Pepepita (something like that), the cat. And the highlight, which isn't on the web site is that there is WiFi.
