One week ago, my wife and I spent one wonderful week in this hotel. It was one of the most pleasant and relaxing vacations we ever had, although we have been fortunate to have travelled to many special places. The personnel was very accommodating, responsive, and friendly. The entire premises including the pool are being kept impeccably clean. Every day, the towels were exchanged, the bed was prepared with fresh linens; our room – and even the terrace - was not only swept, but also finished up with a whet cloth. As a unique gesture, each time after everything was finished, the cleaning personnel created a cute little animal shaped from towels and placed it on the bed. Every room has a whirlpool bath, is air-conditioned, has ceiling fans, a coffee machine, a hair fan, a large flat TV, a radio with CD player, a small safe box, and a small refrigerator filled with soda and beer (for a charge). Immaculately clean white terry robes are in the bathrooms, and clean pool towels are available if you need them.
We replaced the items available in the refrigerator with our own purchases. Sometimes we had breakfast, lunch and dinner at the restaurant on premises, but we also chose to purchase breakfast items at the close-by (1/2 mile) “supermarket” and enjoyed the meal in our room. That’s where we also bought water for coffee/tee and brushing our teeth. We followed very strictly the general rule of only drinking water from a sealed bottle, not eating uncooked vegetables and fruits, and not to eat “home-made” ice cream; that way we did just fine … without any health related complications. We strongly recommend taking with you a good mosquito repellant, your own favorite coffee/tea, coffee filters, and CDs. The room can be kept mosquitoes-free simply by keeping the screen doors closed, but outside, they may be waiting for you and quickly find you. The TV program even has a couple of English speaking channels. Most likely, depending on the location of your laptop, the (free) Wi-Fi connection is weak.
There are plenty of nice and reasonably priced restaurants in the downtown (North of the island !) area. Considering that a taxi ride is “cheep”, we chose to make use of their readily available abundance, rather than rent a scooter or golf cart. By waiting for a taxi (not more than 1 to 3 minutes) at the main road (100 yards away), the ride to and from downtown costs only 30 pesos, in comparison to approximately 50 pesos, when being picked-up at the reception area.
If you are interested in scuba diving, there are great dive sites available for shallow as well as for deep dives and plenty of dive shops. Don’t forget your “PADI” log-book. However, in case you do, they can find you at the “PADI” website. Since I decided not to take my own gear with me, I shopped around for a good and reasonably priced shop, and I can highly recommend http://www.scubagarridoislamujeres.com . They are very friendly and accommodating. They even picked me up with their boat at Villa Vera for a double-tank deep dive although I was the only customer for that day. Try them, you will not regret it. I hope this information is helpful when planning your stay at Villa Vera.
