“Avoid this place!”

We stayed at this facility last year after the hurricane. We agreed with the reviews we found on this site at the time. We paid $60/night and that included breakfast.

This year the place was in worse shape than last year after the hurricane! The pool was dirty. We had standing water in the bathroom from leaks in the plumbing under the sink. The air conditioner leaked into the room as well. At least until it went up in flames and black smoke! Maid service was spotty at best, actually more like non-existent. We had to go to the desk for towels every day. There were obviously people in and out of room when we were gone, as evidenced by our belongings being moved around and other things. Beds in Mexico are generally very firm on their cement platforms, but these beds were exceptionally awful!

Finally, on day four (after the AC blew up) I discussed all of the issues with the desk clerk and he offerred us a different room. It had 1/2" of standing water in the bathroom, obviously leaking from the toilet tank. The mattresses were concave and may have been salvaged from the hurricane. This "good room" was much worse than what we already had!

My son and daughter-in-law were also staying there and I am convinced they had the only room without major problems. Although they had the same concern that people were in their room when they left. Not maid service though: they didn't have maid service even once.

I think that when we stayed here last year it was called the Mar Azul. This year it was called the Perla de Carribe. When we checked out the manager/owner? told us he was closing the hotel, although we had noticed him renting out rooms that morning. He said there were just too many problems.

  • Liked — Located close to restaurants, grocery, internet cafes and beach
  • Disliked — Leaky plumbing, flaming AC, strangers in our room

“Loved it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 March 2007

I stayed at the hotel back in February con mis companeros de mi escuela. We went on a school trip with our Spanish class down there. The first hotel that we stayed at was terrible. It was so run down and horrible that our teachers moved us. We moved all our luggage over to the Perla Del Caribe and I was amazed. The hotel was wonderful. The staff members were friendly and they had a nice little restaurant right outside of the hotel. The rooms are not 5 stars, but they're very nice. They had two double beds, AC, and cable. It was a nice place to stay.

“Great for the Price”

Although the hotel bathroom was small and the rusted water heater was visible, I thought the hotel was great. The bartender Luis played dominoes with my kids in the evenings, and arranged for anything we needed:snorkling, diving, boat trips. Isla is all about the kickbacks, but who cares when someone comes to pick you up at your hotel and take you to the boat, or trains your daughter to dive in the pool. They showed movies on the TV next to the bar, and offered to babysit my kids if my husband and I ever wanted a night out alone. Coffee in the mornings, and walking distance to north beach, and for $40 a night, it was great. I don't remember much about the room because I didn't go on vacation to sit in my room and watch TV.

“perla del caribe”

My husband I have just returned from the island. We stayed at the Perla del Caribe with Pedrio who was very wonderful and kind. The hotel is clean and just getting back together after the hurricane so it only has about 25 rooms ready. This hotel is not a five star hotel, but diffently a three. We have been to the island a few times find it wonderful. We visted a new place this time called Moonlite @ Miguel's it was wonderful, if you like shrimp and they are large you will love Miguel's. I had the garlic shrimp it was wonderful and plenty of it. If you get a chance you need to visit because it is 2 for 1 most of the day. If you have never been to the island you need to remember it is Mexico, don't be in a hurry, your not at work your on VACATION. This island and the places we visit make us feel very safe and most welcome, ISLA IS LIKE HOME FOR US.

“Pleasantly surprised by Mar Azul”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 April 2005

We knew very little about this hotel before we arrived thus had some concerns but we were pleasantly surprised. The hotel was quite centrally located, had great ocean views and a nice balcony where I sat in the sun in the early AM looking out over the "azul" ocean. It was not fancy, but clean and quiet - and a very nice pool was a bonus. We loved Isla Mujeres and wanted to spend most of our time in the little town and at the beach and since Mar Azul was close to both, it worked out very well for us. Though we're not much for walking any distance, we never had to hire a taxi or rent any kind of vehicle. We reccomend it if one is on a somewhat limited budget. Good value. Good place.
