Just came back from a week in Mexico, (first 4 days in Isla Mujeres)--two couples celebrating our 50th birthdays. We had read reviews of Hotel Osorio and a number of other places before we went to Isla Mujeres, but hadn't booked anything, thinking (rightly!), that we'd be able to get something when we got there.
We checked into a hotel right on the beach the first night because we arrived late. Can't remember the name of it, but it was just okay--basic rooms with a fan (no a/c), and a nice pool. It was $55/night per room. We checked out the next morning and roamed the streets checking on some prices, looking at rooms.
Hotel Osorio was just what we were looking for! Only $25/night and although the rooms were very basic--two double beds, bathroom with shower only, ceiling fan--they were spotlessly clean. I think the beds in my husband's and my room were just boxsprings (and our friends' beds were just mattresses, so I guess they made 4 beds out of 2), but we slept comfortably anyway. It can be loud sometimes at night, as people make their way home along the street below, but the noise didn't disturb me at all, and my husband had earplugs, so didn't mind it either. If you're sensitive to noise--I'd recommend earplugs.
Our building, (which is across the street from the main hotel), has a big patio on the second floor (we were on the third floor), and we were able to sit out there at night for our 'happy hour' and a card game--very nice.
Only about one block from the beach, and right around the corner from great, authentic restaurants and the heartbeat of Isle Mujeres, this was a great place to stay for the price. Don't expect luxury!
